Late Posted November 16, 2019 Author Report Posted November 16, 2019 A mid-70's occasion where Sonny Fortune is soaring. (There used to be a longer version of this on YouTube, but I couldn't find it.) Quote

Azar Lawrence was the last one that didn't get overwhelmed. Players as strong as Bartz and George Adams just went under, let alone poor Joe Ford. Sonny Fortune did the best with him. I never heard George Adams go under, ever. In the case of Ford, and to a lesser extent Bartz, I'd put the onus of being "overwhelmed" on them, not McCoy. It's never on the leader to play down to their sidemen unless they have a reason. Otherwise, you on the gig, play. But to be fair, I saw Bartz live with McCoy ca. 1983, and he was magnificent. Totally. Quote

JSngry Posted November 17, 2019 Report Posted November 17, 2019 Nah, some place in Santa Fe. I was living in Albuquerque then. Same band that was on Dimensions with Terrence Blanchard added. Damn good group live, at least that night. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 17, 2019 Report Posted November 17, 2019 I love Gary Bartz’s playing with the 1970-71 Miles bands. And he sounds great on the McCoy albums I’ve heard him on, Expansions/Extensions/Asante/Sama Layuca Quote

Sama Layuca is a wonderful album, though Bartz's contributions don't jump out in my memory. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 I note that Black Saint has just been re-released on a German label called "Our Swimmer". Does anyone know anything about it? Is it a boot? Quote
cliffpeterson Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Saw The Cookers this past Saturday at The Falcon in Marlboro. Showed signs of lack of playing together-the unison reed and brass playing was not a little off-not so the rhythm. The solos were great. 3 players at least 80 years old. Quote
Pim Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Both concerts in Holland got cancelled. The first in march 2020, the postponed in 2021 also. Really makes me sad as it could be a last opportunity to see these guys live... Quote
erwbol Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 There are/were some very good Cookers boots on Dimeadozen if its any consolation, Pim. Quote
Pim Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Thanks! But for me it really is about caputring the guys in real life. Quote
mjazzg Posted September 14, 2021 Report Posted September 14, 2021 Of interest to resident BH fans perhaps Quote

I frequently clear its entire cache (+cookies, etc), which seems to zero out counters of allowed articles. Some sites have hard paywalls (no freebies allowed), in which case this doesn't work, but many allow access to 1 to 5 articles before enforcing the paywall. I just read the article, which would have been paywalled for me on Chrome (my usual browser), that way. Edited January 21, 2023 by T.D. Quote
Pim Posted January 21, 2023 Report Posted January 21, 2023 Thanks for sharing. Still hoping for a European tour here… I would definitely travel to Belgium or Germany to capture him live. I didn’t knew he had an 11 year old daughter 😲 Quote

Obviously his wife is pretty youngish. I'm going to see the Cookers in a month or so here. Had no idea he was 80. I hope I look like that when I'm 80. Quote

I saw BH live when he was 75 and was stunned at how young he looked (didn't even have gray hair then iirc). Quote
