To me, McCoy Tyner had the same effect on his 70's sax players.  Azar Lawrence was the last one that didn't get overwhelmed.  Players as strong as Bartz and George Adams just went under, let alone poor Joe Ford.   Sonny Fortune did the best with him.

I never heard George Adams go under, ever.

In the case of Ford, and to a lesser extent Bartz, I'd put the onus of being "overwhelmed" on them, not McCoy. It's never on the leader to play down to their sidemen unless they have a reason. Otherwise, you on the gig, play.

But to be fair, I saw Bartz live with McCoy ca. 1983, and he was magnificent. Totally.

McCoy Tyner Quartet with Gary Bartz at the short-lived Judge's Chambers?

I love Gary Bartz’s playing with the 1970-71 Miles bands.  And he sounds great on the McCoy albums I’ve heard him on, Expansions/Extensions/Asante/Sama Layuca

Bartz is not on Asante, that's Andrew White.  I agree he sounds great on Expansions and Extensions.  Sama Layuca is a wonderful album, though Bartz's contributions don't jump out in my memory.

Is this a Gary Bartz or Billy Harper Topic?

Probably moderators could extract the last 10 Posts and create/insert into an existing (?) Gary Bartz thread....

They're ALL good! Get 'em.

Board member David Weiss is the organizer of that group!  And yes, you need all of their recordings!

Nothing to add. All great recordings. Never thought it would happen but going to see them in March in Rotterdam!

Saw The Cookers this past Saturday at The Falcon in Marlboro.  Showed signs of lack of playing together-the unison reed and brass playing was not a little off-not so the rhythm.   The solos were great.  3 players at least 80 years old.

Both concerts in Holland got cancelled. The first in march 2020, the postponed in 2021 also. Really makes me sad as it could be a last opportunity to see these guys live...

$#%$& Paywall

John, I use a "burner browser" (Edge, but it could be any) just to access sites with paywalls. I frequently clear its entire cache (+cookies, etc), which seems to zero out counters of allowed articles. Some sites have hard paywalls (no freebies allowed), in which case this doesn't work, but many allow access to 1 to 5 articles before enforcing the paywall.

I just read the article, which would have been paywalled for me on Chrome (my usual browser), that way.

Thanks for sharing. Still hoping for a European tour here… I would definitely travel to Belgium or Germany to capture him live. I didn’t knew he had an 11 year old daughter 😲

Yea that's interesting. Obviously his wife is pretty youngish. I'm going to see the Cookers in a month or so here. Had no idea he was 80. I hope I look like that when I'm 80.

I saw BH live when he was 75 and was stunned at how young he looked (didn't even have gray hair then iirc).
