clifford_thornton Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 That seems heavy-handed. ........... And I really have a "thing" for trumpet-and-rhythm combos. I look quite forward to this. And will keep an eye out for the Thad-Mel-Henderson disc, thanks Ubu. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 Especially since David Weiss above states that the release has been long-planned. Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) "Industry sources" tell me that Freddie got his money for this release in advance, before he died, in order to defray medical expenses, and that there are also plans to, if possible, "overpress" so tha tFreddie's widow will get a much-needed publishing royalty upfront. In other words, this ain't no cheap exploitation release. As for the rest of the Jazz Wave Ltd. concerts, that's something I had asked Cuscun about a long time ago, specificiallyto find out if there was more of Joe Henderson playing w/Thad & MEl (the one released cut is smokin', as they say...). He said then that there were money issues on that tour, and no small amount of bad feelings towards Sonny Lester as a result, so probably no further issue of JWL material. But here we are. Time changes things sometimes, Sorry, but this isn't really correct. The release of this has been in the works for a while, over a year. Freddie and I listened to these recordings last January (2008) while we were working on our last CD together (we were doing post production stuff in LA and we played this stuff in the car to and from the studio every day, he loved it). The takes were chosen and mixed over the Summer I believe and Freddie asked for some changes to be made in the order after he received the first master. This was all done way before he had his heart attack. He was paid for the relase of this of course and in advance which is the norm for this and it had nothing to do with medical expenses as he wasn't hospitalized yet. Now the overpress thing, that would be nice and this hasn't been mentioned to me so I can't say for sure. I think I know who your source is and I personally took a lot of the information I used to get from him with a grain of salt.... Forgot Henderson was on the Thad and Mel stuff. That would make it well worth investigating and as you said time does change things...... perhaps another call is in order I'll take your word on all this, David. JSngry Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 This is great news! And a note on this one: As for the rest of the Jazz Wave Ltd. concerts, that's something I had asked Cuscun about a long time ago, specificiallyto find out if there was more of Joe Henderson playing w/Thad & MEl (the one released cut is smokin', as they say...). He said then that there were money issues on that tour, and no small amount of bad feelings towards Sonny Lester as a result, so probably no further issue of JWL material. certainly you're aware of this smokin' live disc featuring Henderson: an excellent disc, all 'round! Certainly and indeed, but for my taste, Joe's contribution to the JWL is far superior than what he does on that one. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 cool colston hall in bristol .. Saw Woody Herman there in about 1978. I wonder if 'Free' was in the band? Quote
sidewinder Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 but what is overpress ? CD equivalent to quantitative easing? Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Granted any excuse for previously unreleased good music is a good one for the listener/fan/player. Having said this, interesting timing, ain't it? Freddie hadn't recorded for Blue Note for years. I can hear the wheels turning over there and naturally they were holding out for just such a sad (not to them, evidently) occasion. They would never exploit a world-class artist like this with the body still warm anywhere else in the jazz-loving world but here. That's a fact Seems death is a good career move. Ooh, that's mean. I'm amazed that you would think that. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Joel, this is very disappointing - please read David Weiss' comments. This release was in production for over a year. Its unfortunate that Freddie didn't live to see it but BN was hardly guilty of what you say, as David tells us that they listened to the tapes long before he fell ill. Quote

ejp626 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Cover's up on Amazon. Gack!!! Looks like he swallowed the Yellow Submarine, and it's backing up on him. Never thought of Freddie as a Blue (Note) Meanie. Quote
WorldB3 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 I guess since they had such good success with the Monk/Coltrane at Carnigie and Mingus at Cornell might as well keep going with the ugly covers because the music is so great. I guess I would say this cover is the best out of three. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Looks to me like they wanted cover art that would "fit" on some level with the Jazz Wave Ltd issue of the original concert recordings from this tour. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Don't forget the Horace Silver! I think that has the best cover myself. Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) And what the hell is a $0.49 "sourcing fee"??? I don't like the sound of that - is Amazon starting to charge that on all CDs? Edit - there is no sign of the "sourcing fee" anymore, but the list price has bumped up to $17.98 to apparently include it without you seeing it. Edited April 28, 2009 by Aggie87 Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 I'm totally fine with the "period" cover. Quote

jazztrain Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 I liked what I heard (but have only heard part of the new CD). Freddie was in fine form at that time (the material is from live 1969 dates in Europe). The MPS album recorded around that time ("The Hub of Hubbard") has some truly scary playing by Freddie. If you've heard that album, you'll know what I mean. The live recordings on the new CD are by the same group (minus Eddie Daniels who was on part of the MPS album). If you like the MPS album, I imagine you'd like the new CD. From memory, some of the songs on the new CD were also on the MPS album (but obviously in different performances). All of the recordings are issued for the first time with the exception of "Body and Soul" which was issued previously on the Jazz Wave, Ltd. anthology mentioned a bit earlier in this thread. Mike Schwartz Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) What's the verdict? It's Freddie in absolutely top form! Not a working band, so you'll get mostly standards. All the selections are released for the first time with the exception of one tune which appeared on a Blue Note date Edited May 31, 2009 by Mike Schwartz Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 Standard material, though not so standard arrangements -- things open up in unexpected ways. Those rhapsodizing Roland Hanna solos. Louis Hayes cymbal sounds on the title track are a bit over the top -- he's really bashing in the name of energy, though that's going to be a matter of taste it was a bit distracting to me. Elsewhere, no problem with him. Freddie and Roland Hanna are in great form throughout. Quote
