jazzbo Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 TM, if it makes any difference, I've pre-ordered. I've ever set that is in print, might as well keep that run going. Looks like a good set. Quote
tranemonk Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 okay... I found this clip.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFzuGvhvwL4 I gotta say I'm warming up to the set... If you would have told me 5 years ago I would have considered buying 8 hours of Bing Crosby.. I would have told you that you were   Quote

If you would have told me 5 years ago I would have considered buying 8 hours of Bing Crosby.. I would have told you that you were   That's the best four minutes of that movie. The All Stars! Louis! Bing! Hot stuff. Bing is really right on here with phrase and swing and such a great tone. Edited October 16, 2009 by jazzbo Quote
Dave James Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Well there's no doubt the guy can sing. Even the throw away stuff from the "Road" pictures is listenable. I grew up watching Crosby and Bob Hope act like a couple of morons in those movies and I loved every minute of it. Matter of fact, I still do. If for no other reason than that, I think I'm going to go for this set. If I sound like I'm trying to talk myself into it, you're probably right. I feel like I owe it to Bing for all the laughs. I can't wait for the Dorothy Lamour Mosaic. Up over and out. Quote
mellowT Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 (edited) I'm tempted to preorder this set today, but I'd really like to listen to those 5 samples. Unfortunately, the format is not Mac-compatible. Neither are the Artie Shaw ones. All the other Mosaic music clips work. I've tried loading the URL in Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, iTunes, and QuickTime. Nothing works with this newer format. Any suggestions from the Mac enthusiasts out there? Can't try it at work because all streaming content is blocked. Edited October 16, 2009 by mellowT Quote

jazzbo Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 (edited) MT. . .they work for me. They open up in a window of their own and I hit play and off they go. . . I'm using a MacBook. Here's the url for one: http://mosaic.edgeboss.net/wmedia/mosaic/u...tmisbehavin.mp3 Edited October 16, 2009 by jazzbo Quote
medjuck Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I'm using a mac book and I'm getting the window but when I go to play I get a message saying: Unsupported document type. WTF? Quote

In regards to the Mosaic, I've got two of the Decca LP's which came from these sessions, and they are wonderful. I just may have to spring for the set! Quote
mellowT Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I'm using a mac book and I'm getting the window but when I go to play I get a message saying: Unsupported document type. WTF? Yeah, me too. Window's Media Player tells me "The channel does not support the stream format" when I open the URL. I'm using an older iMac running Tiger. Something's different with the new music samples. Thanks for the reply, jazzbo, but I even tried installing a browser plugin from Microsoft called Flip4Mac, but when I click on the sample link, it tries to load the page but never completes. Works for the Louis Armstrong ones though. Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 No problems here (XP SP3, IE8). The clips sound great, I might consider this set - maybe in a few months Quote

Bing is great too, but the Armstrong will be around for a long time and I hope you listen to some single discs or so and finally order it. One of their best sets ever. Wynton would want you to. tranemonk Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I know how important he is.. It is somewhat superficial... but I REALLY can't get past his presentation.. As an African-American the whole smilin'/grinnin' stuff.. always has bothered me... I KNOW why he did it.. .and I KNOW it didn't hide the amount of pain he had to endure.. but I can't help contrast him with Jack Johnson or even Jackie Robinson (who's later politics were awful IMHO) .... It's a visercal, emotional.... gut reaction.. It just REALLY limits my ability to appreciate his work and musicianship..... Maybe it'll change over time... But I've had the same feeling about him for decades.... jazzbo Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I can understand that in a way. . . I feel very similarly about Sinatra and all that Rat Pack posturing and attitude and I still don't get Sinatra's music, partly because of that. But I'm not sure you really do understand why Armstrong did what he did. . . I think an awful lot of that happiness displayed and presented was his real personality. Neither of us can know for sure. I don't like Wynton's presentation. . . but I do like his music. I think you can get beyond that with Armstrong, especially as the Mosaic is not a video set. The joy in the music is real, not manufactured for the nice white folk. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) tranemonk - Armstrong NEVER did anything, in terms of performance or entertainment, that he did not want to do. Take or leave it if you like, but what you're saying is really insulting to the man, though unintended - you are saying that because he acted/performed in a way that is counter to your world view, he has lost validity. Well, certainly he did what he had to do at times, in ways that may, to us, seem compromised - but remember that Armstrong is the most revolutionary American musician of the 20th century, the man who single handedly changed everything about American song, from its rhythms to its melodies. JSngry Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I don't like Wynton's presentation. . . but I do like his music. I don't like Wynton's presentation or his music, but I'll wager that he'd whoppass on anybody who would use him for an avatar & then turn around & dis Luis Armstrong. Or who would dig Bing Crosby but not Louis Armstrong. Hell, Bing Crosby himself would probably go get the belt for somebody who did that! Quote

Still pondering that Crosby set. I imagine I'll buy it in the end. I always do. Sigh. gregmo Quote
