Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz Live Boxed Set

Recommended Posts

From a quick look at what's inside the 4CD set, it seems all the material on the first 3 CDs has been previously released by Storyville, but CD4 looks like it has not seen the light of the day up to now!

It has all been available - the 3 Warne/Lee Live at the Montmartre, and 2 dates Warne made in the studio, one trio and one quartet issued with the title(s) The Unissued Copenhagen Studio Recordings.

Chuck was the one who would know for sure...

Of course, the previously released Warne Marsh volumes 'Unissued 1975 Copenhagen Studio Sessions'.

Then there's nothing that I don't already have.

Too bad since it seems there is quite a number of unreleased material from the Marsh-Konitz Montmartre dates that should have been included in the 4CD set!

Thanks for clearing this, Chuck!

I guess I'll rather look for the third volume and the "unissued" disc then...

Would be nice to see some box sets from Storyville that go beyond re-packaging, indeed!

I was happy with their Duke and Ben Webster boxes, and still need to get their Dexter Gordon box, as in none of these cases I'd owned anything before (except for one disc from Webster, which I passed on to a friend who loves Ben, too).

But if you don't already have the material, it's the way to go.

Yes of course!

Also with their recent Griffin set (3CDs plus a DVD, I own 2CDs... and might have seen the DVD footage, but as I don't watch such things repeatedly, I'll not jump for the box and rather look for the missing disc, being "Catharsis" in that case).

hm, seems Vol. 3 is impossible to find and "Unissued" costs almost 20€, which makes the box an option, after all...

It's listed as an MP3 download on amazon.com already, but not as CD release. No listing on amazon.de or .fr yet.

There's also this recent 2CD set:

Red Mitchell and Warne Marsh had a series of engagements in Scandinavia during April of 1980. On the 18th and 19th of April they were playing at the Fasching Club in Stockholm where these two CD’s were recorded. The combination of tenorsaxophone and bass were rare but it worked out very good. As Mitchell observed, a duo is the smallest group you can get. "When I layed out it’s obvious that Warne doesn’t need a bass player. He can play all by himself, he can play all the chords, all the rhythms, he can play the bass lines and he certainly knows the melodies".

"Most of the compositions are taken from The Great American Songbook, others are bebop classics based on the chord changes of standards. Funky it ain’t but swing it does, with great taste and subtlety as well as some superb improvisations."

I guess this, too, is a re-packing thing? I don't have any Marsh/Mitchell disc, so this is very attractive!

December 1975 was a busy month for Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz. It was Warne Marsh’s first visit to Europe.

They played December 3,4 & 5 at the Montmartre in Copenhagen and came back the 27th and played yet another concert at the Montmartre. They were at Rosenberg studio December 28 and 29 for further recordings. All dates were recorded and the result can be heard on this 4 CD box.

It is amazing music from the two Lennie Tristano "pupils".

They played with the Danish musicians Ole Kock Hansen (p) Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b) and Alex Riel (dr) and for the later sessions with Dave Cliff (g) Peter Ind (b) And Alan Lewitt (dr)
