felser Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Mingus is very important to my listening world Mine too. Named my first male cat "Mingus". Quote
jazzbo Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 (edited) And I'm glad these sets are available for new jazz listeners. These are great packages for those new to jazz to legally acquire the music cost-effectively in great sound. Edited August 3, 2012 by jazzbo Quote
jazzbo Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Sorry, I guess I had something else on my mind. I'm going to correct that to "jazz." Quote
T.D. Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Some UK-based sellers on amazon.com (US site) have very low prices on the Monk and Mingus "Complete Columbia Albums". This has been happening with a number of boxes originally offered by Popmarket. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 (edited) Picked up the Complete Monty Python Series 1-4 on DVD yesterday for £15. At the supermarket, no less. Now that, to me, is a bargain ! Edited August 4, 2012 by sidewinder Quote

The UK sites are even better (Rarewaves & Zoverstocks) for us in Australia Monk - 13.49 & 13.51 pounds Mingus - 22.84 & 22.86 pounds Quote
GA Russell Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 The US price of the Mingus Columbia/RCA box continues to sink. It is now going for $31.00. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Albums-Collection-Charles-Mingus/dp/B007Y2W49W?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD2EFYQ&tag=camels-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B007Y2W49W Quote
mjzee Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 This is easily the most dangerous thread on this BB. Quote
Jay Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Indeed. Worst thread ever. The Monk and WR boxes I ordered from Zoverstocks are now a few bucks cheaper even than last week. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 mjzee, I probably have said before that it has been my experience going back to the 60s that a much higher percentage of my list price albums have been duds than my $1.99 cutouts! Nowadays, I find that a box set on sale is like a cut out. It helps that so many of us here like decades-old music, which many of these box sets are. For my tastes, the box set pickings have been slim since the first of the year, but I'm hoping that things will pick up at Christmastime. Quote
StarThrower Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 I just bought the Miles Davis Quintet 1965-1968 for 19 dollars! Same price for the Miles/Gil Evans, and Miles/Coltrane boxes. That's right! 6 CD sets for 19 bucks!!!! http://www.grooves-inc.com/davis-miles-1965-1968-col-cd-album-pZZa1-1896336418.html Quote

StarThrower Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 ^^^^^^^^^^ Thanks god for that! I don't dig those metal spine things. I already owned most of the individual CDs, with the exception of Circle In The Round. The box was cheaper than the 2 disc Circle set. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 20, 2012 Author Report Posted August 20, 2012 (edited) Amazon UK... Bill Evans - The Riverside and Milestone Albums (15 cd's) - 34.78 GBP - 20% VAT = 27.82 GBP http://www.amazon.co...45437896&sr=1-1 At the current exchange rate of $1.57, that comes to $43.68 plus shipping. In my order over the weekend, I added it to my dvd order which had 9 GBP for shipping, and the Evans box did not add anything more to the shipping total. Amazon US... $51.14 http://www.amazon.co...e+and+Milestone PS - As per Jetman's comment, I think that the $1.57 includes the bank's fee to convert the pounds to dollars. Amazon was offering to convert at $1.63. Edited August 20, 2012 by GA Russell Quote

What is included and how is it included (all bonus cuts and multiple alt taks or at the end)? I am asking because I have a few of the older ojcs. 2. Sound quality or mastering (not to get all Hoffman on this point but curious nonetheless)? Thanks much for any guidance. Quote

If it's like the other sets in this series, it contains EXACT copies of the OJC cd's released in the States in the late 80s and early 90s by Fantasy. The cd's are enclosed in cheap mini-lp sleeves that, incidentally, are NOT exact replicas of the original lp sleeves. Quote

Starting to think that this applies to those Pop Market boxes as well. Trying to avoid the constant circle of rebuying what I already own. Quote
JETman Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 The Pop Markets in general have a considerably nicer presentation, although lots have problems with the "mysterious" white borders that appear around the cover pictures. Btw, there's usually nothing wrong with the mastering on those early OJCCD's. If yuo don't already have most of the albums, buying those Euro boxes is a cheap way to go. Quote

They are exact copies, but I thought the Evans would be like the Tatums I have in the same series: double jewel cases in a slip case. It's basic, but no more cheap than zillions of other boxed sets out there, including Mosaic Selects. Quote
king ubu Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 Are you sure about the mini LP packing of the single discs? I've only got one of these (the Rollins Prestige) and is has the discs (eight of them, the albums - the box is not identical in content to the earlier complete 7CD set, missing several sideman sessions/albums) in two jumbo jewel cases, each holding four discs. The others I've seen in stores (Ellington Carnegie, Chet Baker Riverside, Coltrane Prestige) looked the same to me. Quote

It uses the mini-lp packaging. Maybe when they changed for succeeding pressings, they put these in jewel cases? I know they went from a longbox version (which I have) to what looks like a cube. Quote
king ubu Posted September 1, 2012 Report Posted September 1, 2012 Saw the new Coltrane in a store today - way to thin to contain jewel cases ... guess they go the mini-LP route for larger sets or they've just changed somewhere along the way. Does the Miles contain a booklet with anything other than line-ups, tracklist and all the usual information? Quote
