bertrand Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 This looks promising - Blue Mitchell, Stanley Turrentine and Frank Haines. Any reason not to get this? Are the compositions somewhat interesting? Thanks, Bertraand. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 It's very good - recommended ! Quote
king ubu Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 Yes indeed! Discovered it last year, Japanese reissue... fine one! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 I've the earlier US release Excellent. Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 (edited) There are very few albums with tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes, one of my favourites, so I'd say grab it! Haynes was on 3 of Dave Bailey's albums, Reaching Out (later reissued under Grant Green's name with the same title), Bash! (later reissued under Kenny Dorham's name as Osmosis) and Two Feet in the Gutter. Edited February 14, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
king ubu Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 And he's on a BAD Randy Weston albums, too! (reissued by Fresh Sound - thankfully, for once!) Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 There are very few albums with tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes, one of my favourites, so I'd say grab it! Haynes was on 3 of Dave Bailey's albums, Reaching Out (later reissued under Grant Green's name with the same title), Bash! (later reissued under Kenny Dorham's name as Osmosis) and Two Feet in the Gutter. Reaching Out was also reissued by Muse under Grant's name as Green Blues. Not sure if I never actually heard it or had it and let it go but I've been reintroduced to it thanks to a friend and am glad to have it. I particularly enjoyed "Flick of a Trick" being very familiar with it from its appearance on Dexter's Gettin' Around CD reissue. As to the thread topic, I am surprised Bertrand would need encouragement to go for this one since Bobby Hutcherson is on it. Quote
DMP Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 That was a productive week in New York for McCann - The Turrentine/McCann Blue Note is another product. Bring on "The Shampoo!" Quote
king ubu Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 That was a productive week in New York for McCann - The Turrentine/McCann Blue Note is another product. Bring on "The Shampoo!" I thought that was the deal... McCann would appear on a BN album with Stanley and vice-versa for Pacific Jazz? Quote
DMP Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 Correct. And "The Shampoo" is more live material from McCann's Village Gate engagement, with just his trio. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 Also, it sounds like, 'From the top of the barrel' and/or 'New from the big city'. I think it's the latter, but maybe both. Oh, and everything everyone's said about this album is right! MG Quote
Pete C Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 I wish someone would release A Bag of Gold on CD. I wore out the grooves on the lp I had in the '70s, which I believe I bought as a cutout at Sam Goody's bargain outlet (IIRC, across the street from the main store where Harry Lim worked). Quote
JSngry Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I think The Shampoo was once released on the Tegrin label. Quote
Pete C Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I think The Shampoo was once released on the Tegrin label. Halo everybody, Halo Halo is the shampoo that glorifies your hair So Halo everybody, Halo! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Halo? Helo Pinheiro, the real girl from Ipanema. Quote
DMP Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Before McCann played "The Shampoo," Steve Allen (this was his mid-'60's late show, on the Westinghouse network) asked how he came up with the title - "I didn't, the producer named it." Dick Bock, marketing genius! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 Halo? Helo Pinheiro, the real girl from Ipanema. There was a David Dimbleby documentary about Brazil on TV last year and he actually got her on and interviewed her. Still at about sixty, a very attractive lady and an icon in Brazil. MG Quote
Pete C Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 an icon in Brazil. When one walks like a samba, one is bound to be. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 I have her on a tape of the Merv Griffin show in Rio that includes an interview with Jobim in his study (thanks JimR!) and her daughter was also interviewed, she had just won "Miss Ipanema." Lovely women. Quote
