Justin V Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 I just received an email from Mosaic that the solo Andrew Hill, Tony Williams and Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Mosaic Selects are running low, as well as the Bud Freeman and Jazz Piano Mosaic Singles. I've finally pulled the trigger on the Hill set. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 I put off getting the solo Hill for ages, but finally got one a couple years ago - and really love it. And it gets better with repeated spins, as I start to anticipate the shifting themes better. I'm hardly impartial, but I didn't think I would end up liking the solo Hill set as much as I have. Great listening while I'm at work, which is where I keep my copy. (Didn't spin it nearly as often at home.) Quote
mikeweil Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 Can anyone here give advice on the Freeman? Quote
Clunky Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) Can anyone here give advice on the Freeman? Chicago sound of Condon etc. Spirited as much of this music is often described. I'm not enough of an expert to know where it sits with Condonites but it's solid , swinging stuff Edited May 20, 2014 by Clunky Quote
mikeweil Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 How is Pee Wee Russel on this album - I would buy it for him in the first place ... Quote
Clunky Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) How is Pee Wee Russel on this album - I would buy it for him in the first place ... Prompted by your query I played the whole disc tonight, it sounded great, I wasn't especially listening out for Pee Wee but he gets decent amount of space. Edited May 20, 2014 by Clunky Quote
sidewinder Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 The Freeeman is excellent. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was a pleasant suprise. Looks like I will need to pick up the Tony Williams and the Toshiko.. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 I have all of Tony's original CDs, but just ordered the Akiyoshi-Tabackin select. Quote
Daniel A Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) I'm thinking of getting it anyway, though, because my albums are packed up in the closet for lack of shelf space. That's the spirit! You're getting it because you have already run out of space. Edited May 23, 2014 by Daniel A Quote

sidewinder Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) I have all of Tony's original CDs, but just ordered the Akiyoshi-Tabackin select. A good one. I'm already ranking it up there with Thad & Mel in their 'modern' big-band sets. also, Just noticed that Andrew Hill 'Solo' is now in Last Chance... Edited July 10, 2014 by sidewinder Quote
Eric Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 also, Just noticed that Andrew Hill 'Solo' is now in Last Chance... Just picked up that one myself, did not realize it was "running low". Really nice music. Quote
bogdan101 Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 Thx for the reminder; ordered Andrew Hill solo and Tony Williams Quote
sidewinder Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 (edited) I have pretty well all the LPs by Akiyoshi/Tabakin but had forgotten just how good the music/arrangements were - and it is good to have it all in the digital format. Superb craftsmanship went into those arrangements - and the various bands are up to it. Sound on the Tony Williams seems to be better than on the individual CDs as well, so you can't go wrong with that set either. Edited July 11, 2014 by sidewinder Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 I got the Bud Freeman with my winnings from the Grey Cup pool, good stuff. Quote
miles65 Posted July 20, 2014 Author Report Posted July 20, 2014 The Duke Ellington single 'The Cosmic Scene' is now oop Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Still lamenting that the Singles and Select series are no longer. Quote

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I believe I will. I've had my eye on that set for a long time, and had previously ruled out getting the CDs issued by Candid themselves. Looking at Cuscuna's feedback profile, there has been a lot of activity from him on ebay lately. Worth keeping an eye on bluenotesound. Some of the sets auctioned today were also on sale earlier this month. Edited July 26, 2014 by erwbol Quote
