When I want to hear that special sound "up close & personal", I usually pull this CD off the shelf:

Secondary, 2 of 16

That's a good one too. But "Renaissance" has Jim Hall and Jimmy Rowles. . . I love both of those guys and having Jim and Jimmy is a bit plus. . . .

Metheny / Mehldau (Nonesuch, 2006)

I've seen this album compared to the Bill Evans/Jim Hall collaborations, but I think it's much closer--in terms of its overall vibe, if not instrumentation--to ECM albums from the 1970s like Crystal Silence or Matchbook or Bright Size Life.

Ralph Irizarry & Timbalaye (Shanachie, 1998)
Good stuff.  Irizarry was an outstanding timbalero who played with Ray Barretto's and Rubén Blades' bands.

Just in from discogs in the mail a Helen Merrill I never expected to find at a decent price:

Helen Merrill “Sing A Swing With Digital” Mitsubishi cd, 1983

eb1e81b01582defa65bf7804fccf5379e8549b0e

The track here fusing "All Blues" with "St. Louis Blues" is really cool!

Alto Saxophone – Marshall Royal
Arranged By – Eiji Kitamura, Kousei Uchida or Nat Pierce
Bass – Hideo Kawahara or Monty Budwig
Clarinet – Eiji Kitamura
Drums – Jake Hanna or Tim Horner
Guitar – Cal Collins
Piano – Kousei Uchida
Trombone – George Masso
Trumpet – Jack Sheldon
Vocals – Helen Merrill

INTERESTING NOTE: Mitsubishi Stereo Digital Recording
Made In Japan. All the songs recorded in this CD have done by the system of digital recording. 32ch-PCM recorder X-800 by Mitsubishi Corp., which has the most channels as fixed-head PCM recorder, and digital recorder X-80 with 2 channel fixed-head by the same company are built in the digital recorder used here.
