jazzbo Posted June 15, 2023 Report Posted June 15, 2023 I’m revisiting this one. It has so many elements that I love about Ellington records. And the sound is great. Ray Nance! Quote

I didn't know about Williams having cancer. I saw him a few years ago in a duo with Vandermark and he was fantastic. He has a huge sound. I just Googled, discovered the GoFundMe and donated. Quote

jazzbo Posted June 16, 2023 Report Posted June 16, 2023 Thelonious Monk “The Classic Quartet” Candid cd 2023 After waffling I decided to order this new cd even though I do have a budget early cd of this in storage. This new remaster certainly would sound better than that cd in a side by side comparison. And it’s a great performance. On the same day in Tokyo the Monk Quartet did this tv show performance, and a concert released by Columbia/Sony as a 2 disc set. The latter is stereo, this TV performance was recorded in mono. Quote
felser Posted June 16, 2023 Report Posted June 16, 2023 I always enjoy any of the iterations of this cooperative and the Mingus Dynasty. Saw the Mingus Dynasty live once at the Painted Bride Art Center when they had Jack Walrath, Joshua Redman, John Hicks, Michael Formanek, Alex Foster (forget the others) and it was an outstanding show. jazzbo Posted June 16, 2023 Report Posted June 16, 2023 I saw them in Austin years ago in a great sounding hall. An amazing performance! Quote

The change is kind of like when Liberty revised the cover art on the first three Chipmunks LPs. They looked like real chipmunks at first, and they were scary with BIG TEETH - the universal indicator that a cartoon character is dangerous. But they were replaced with the cute, non-aggressive Chipmunks that we all know and love. So that first June Christy cover is like the scary early Chipmunks, and the color replacement is like the cute cartoon Chipmunks. Edited June 16, 2023 by Teasing the Korean Quote

T.D. Posted June 17, 2023 Report Posted June 17, 2023 Bought this obscure disc because it was cheap, but it proved to be a sleeper and I really like it. Mix of piano trio and quintet (w. tenor, trumpet). Straight-ahead, he's obviously influenced by Bill Evans but for whatever reason it all works for me. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted June 17, 2023 Report Posted June 17, 2023 B Brilliant live solo piano, out June 30 on Sunnyside. Finally got around to acquiring this 2009 release after doing an interview with Helen Sung, it didn't disappoint! Quote
