Miles Davis “Big Fun” Columbia 2-LP, Side A, “Great Expectations”

Lucy got a call that will take a spell so I’m slipping this in, my OG vinyl copy that still sounds great. I was fascinated with these 2 LPs for years after their release–grabbed this as soon as it was out. Just such a fusion of all that was going on in the music around me at the time.

Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette “Bye Bye Blackbird” ECM cd

That´s a fine record. And together with Dave Liebman´s "Drum Ode" the only ECM I have.

But I like Keith most when he was with Miles around the time of "Live Evil". This was just the times where this early kind of electric jazz with Fender Rhodes and Yamaha Organ was invented.

I also liked those 2LPs albums of Miles and as being from that generation (from 1972-75 I was a teenager from 13 - 16 years and a Miles freak from the very first moment on (both acoustic and electric). So it´s natural I bought all of them as soon as they came out, Live Evil, Miles in Concert, Get Up with It, Dark Magus, Agharta, Pangheea it was). And those caricatures on the covers, like you have them on "On the Corner", "Big Fun", "Miles in Concert", they aren´t even exagerated. That´s how WE looked like, how we dressed.....
On that album is also "Ife". The song I fell in love with when I heard it live : Miles with Dave Liebman, Lieb on flute.....wonderful moments......, very similar to the way it is on "Dark Magus"......

I did quite enjoy this record even if in it's own way it is as piously retro as a Wynton Marsalis album (something which I also quite enjoy). I'm not sure I would listen to it again. Overall, it is fine. Expectation meeting.

Dexter Gordon “Night Ballads, Montreal 1977” Uptown cd

Someone was asking about this on the Hoffman board days ago and so I found it in the shelves. Sound is okay, and Dexter playing ballads is always a great listen. Early morning here is a little like night, or as close to it as I usually can get in listening time. The mood is right.

That's a big favourite of mine.

Could you expand on the "piously retro" description a little, I'm intrigued.

Disc 7.

Not at all connected to the Mosaic box, this is a compilation (done by Castle Communications) of various releases you used to find in the remainder bins, from Lionel Hampton's Who's Who In Jazz label, "Live At Midem" releases, "Live At Bubba's" releases, and the like.  Won't make anyone's Best Of list, but very pleasant background listening with a few surprises.

This disc contains:

1. Johnny Griffin - Out Of This World.  Johnny Griffin, tenor sax; Kenny Washington, drums; Michael Weiss, piano; Dennis Irwin, bass.  5/ 4&5 /88.

2. Stephane Grappelli - Anything Goes.  Stephane Grappelli, violin; Phil Woods, alto sax; Louis Bellson, drums; John Burr, bass; Marc Fosset, guitar.  9/22/87.

3. Dexter Gordon - Falling In Love Is Wonderful.  Dexter Gordon, soprano sax; Hank Jones, piano; George Duvivier, bass; Oliver Jackson, drums; Candido Camero, conga; Bucky Pizzarelli, guitar; Lionel Hampton, vibes.  11/11/77.

4. Buddy Rich & Lionel Hampton - My Funny Valentine.  Lionel Hampton, vibes; Barry Kiener, piano; Tom Warrington, bass; Buddy Rich, drums; Candido Camero, conga; Steve Marcus, tenor sax; Gary Pribek, tenor sax; Paul Moen, tenor sax.  10/19/77.

5. Carmen McRae - That Old Black Magic.  Carmen McRae, vocals; Marshall Otwell, piano; J. Anderson, bass; Mark Pulice, drums.  1/17/81.

6. Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis - I Can’t Get Started.  Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, tenor sax; Eddie Higgins, piano; Duffy Jackson, drums; Don Mast, bass.  Bubba's Restaurant, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, 11/11/81.

7. Ahmad Jamal - The Folks Who Live On The Hill.  Ahmad Jamal, piano; Payton Crossley, drums; Sabu Adeyola, bass.  3/20/80.

8. Sonny Rollins - Everytime We Say Goodbye.  Sonny Rollins, tenor sax; Sonny Clark, piano; Percy Heath, bass; Roy Haynes, drums.  “Date Unknown” (really from The Sound Of Sonny).

9. Teddy Wilson - Sweet Sue, Just You.  Teddy Wilson, piano; George Duvivier, bass; Teddy Wilson Jr., drums; Sam Turner, conga; Lionel Hampton, vibes; Gerry Fuller, clarinet.  10/7/77.

10. Woody Herman - Body And Soul.  Woody Herman, clarinet; Roland Hanna, piano; Lionel Hampton, vibes; George Mraz, bass; Richie Pratt, drums; Candido Camero, conga; Al Caiola, guitar.  12/13/77.

11. Lionel Hampton - On The Sunny Side Of The Street.  Lionel Hampton, vibes, with the Oliver Jackson Orchestra.  1/22/78.

Is this good? I don't know it.

Very good. It's the first session in this box set. The Sheldon I posted is the second session.  Art sounds very good on these sessions, very relaxed, perhaps relieved by not having  leadership responsibilities

I just mean retrospective, really. Here's it's neo-spiritual jazz rather than neo-bop.

If it's a big favourite, I'll give it another listen.

Jimmy McGriff “Tail Gunner” Groove Merchant/Solid Records Japan cd

c72b12ee787cf638136f8b722f1ddda48e91557f

Sort of funky disco in a “Stuff” (the Band) sort of way, with a big band backing. First time I’m hearing it but it’s sitting well today.

I really like this one–like all Mario Adnet’s work to be honest. Here he is re-arranging and re-visiting pieces by Villa Lobos with “an ear towards” how Antonio Carlos Jobim was influenced by the composer.

As always the sound on this Adventure Music cd is excellent.
