My parents had the “Remember How Great…?” compilation LP (with Ellington, Louis Armstong, Cab Calloway, Dinah Shore, etc) back in the 1960s, and I heard it often – but it was Santana’s cover version of “In a Silent Way” that took me (decades ago) to Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc.

That gives you a  good 6 or 7 years head start on me.  Prez, Bird and Lady Day had all died by the time I might have seen them.
