However I recommend "Me and the Mob and the Music" by Tommy James in which Levy is a central figure. Quote

I don't know that I'd want to read a book about his life. Quote

That's what makes his story interesting to me. Quote
JSngry Posted November 18, 2025 Report Posted November 18, 2025 You can read Hit Men and take it from there. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 19, 2025 Report Posted November 19, 2025 This is a very interesting publisher. I could by a third of their music books right away ...... sigh ..... Quote

I'm of the opinion that one can't truly get an accurate history of anything in the US without accounting for organized crime syndicate involvement. Quote
Dub Modal Posted November 19, 2025 Report Posted November 19, 2025 The Ellington and James Johnson books look intriguing as well. I thought I saw 2 books on Duke but it was just one. Edit to correct again: there are 2 Ellington books. The second is Jack Chambers Tone Parallel. Quote
Niko Posted November 19, 2025 Report Posted November 19, 2025 I bought the Booker Pitman record with the same cover as the book, so that one is smiling at me... "The World's Soprano Sax Nr 1" or something like that, released a few months after Bechet's death ... From what I know, it's a fascinating biography... Quote
JSngry Posted November 19, 2025 Report Posted November 19, 2025 This one caught my eye; https://www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/A/Avenue-Breakdown Quote
Dub Modal Posted November 20, 2025 Report Posted November 20, 2025 Honestly a lot of them look fascinating. I picked up the Dorham and the In With The In Crowd books. Quote

Dub Modal Posted yesterday at 05:15 PM Report Posted yesterday at 05:15 PM My preorder came in last week. Have yet to crack it open beyond a quick scan however. Quote
bertrand Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago I thought it was coming in April? I better get it soon. Even though it was a pre-order, I already paid. Quote

Yeah, mine arrived Wednesday last week. I ordered another book from them at the same time that was in stock and that came near immediately. Hope you get your copy soon. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago Just Checked Amazon - Whistle Stop is $99. for the Hard Back, and $30. for the paperback. Did not see and eBook mentioned. Quote
Dan Gould Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago hmmm hope I get mine soon and then I will have to decide ... set aside the Prestige book to read this first or continue on and then move on to the KD? I have barely cracked Listening to Prestige. Not that it doesn't strike me as something one could pick up and set down and read very piecemeal. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago I finished "Listening To Prestige" earlier today. It was definitely the type of book I was able to read on and off over a number of weeks . Much of the book's discussion of musicians who recorded for Prestige was familiar to me, though every so often I discovered something of which I was unaware. As I said in a previous post, the book caused me to listen to some albums on Prestige that I had not heard in a long long time. Though I would not consider the book an essential read for jazz fans, I did enjoy it and am glad I read it. Quote
bertrand Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago I am OK with paying ahead as long as I get the book at some point! Quote

I am not finished with it but did read it piecemeal too so far. So IMO it can be put aside safely for a while to tackle another one that might require a read in one go. Quote

I am wondering that myself and I cannot find hide nor hair of the order I placed in November after your tip on their big sale. And I remember emailing someone because the Don Byas biography was a lagging shipment because its print-on-demand. But I don't have my order and I don't have the emails. So they better figure this out and send what I paid for or I will be quite upset. Quote
