Ken Dryden Posted Sunday at 03:10 PM Report Posted Sunday at 03:10 PM I remember the lively reaction to one take outside the booth that caused Johnny Varro to stop playing and ask for quiet. My wife and I were present for one of two nights of recording at Feinstein's. Like the Shoeless John Jackson Quartet CD, this session was produced by Phil Carroll on the Sunday afternoon and evening following the Atlanta Jazz Party. Something upset Kenny Davern and he cut loose with a seemingly endless barrage of four letter words. The other musicians stayed calm, as did Phil Carroll. But Kenny Davern was never again invited to play the Atlanta Jazz Party, although Bob Wilber was booked again. Quote

Ken Dryden Posted Sunday at 10:38 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 10:38 PM I was present for both sets one of the two nights, I think it was May 3 2019. Again, I was present for whichever trio tracks that are included from both sets on May 3, 2019, featuring Buster Williams and Matt Wilson Quote

Ken Dryden Posted Sunday at 11:24 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 11:24 PM (edited) Regarding Boby Wilber & Kenny Davern: Summit Reunion in Atlanta: If the engineer did record the cussing between takes, I believe that it was erased or edited out of the recording. We never did figure out what it was that provoked Davern's outburst and I can't ask producer Phil Carroll, as he died in 2008. I feel it might be taken the wrong way if I asked his son. Ken Dryden Posted Sunday at 11:47 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 11:47 PM (edited) We made a donation in support of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz and attended this live taping of the only television edition of the program at SCETV Studios. We received a VHS copy of it, a limited edition of 50. "In Your Own Sweet Way" was a second take necessitated by some problem at the board during take one, which was complete. Dave Brubeck said, "I liked the first one better" during the set. The duo piano CD with Mark Shane and Johnny Varro was recorded live at the 1998 and 1999 Atlanta Jazz Party. Niko Posted yesterday at 09:25 AM Report Posted yesterday at 09:25 AM Enrico Rava - Edizione Speciale I remember standing outside in the crowd in Antwerp, drinking La Chouffe from a plastic cup, it was a sunny afternoon and the music was just right... pretty strange to think that, at the same time, they were recording an ECM album right there... Ken Dryden Posted 1 hour ago Author Report Posted 1 hour ago I talked to HutchFan yesterday and he reminded me about this release. I had just interviewed David Liebman and when he learned where I lived, he invited me to hear him in Nashville. When HutchFan shared that he was playing in Duluth, just northeast of Atlanta, I decided that concert would be less hassle to attend. I have no idea what the local venue did to promote the concert, but the posters billed the group as Dave Liebman & the Expansions. The turnout was minimal, maybe `15 to 20 at most. Yet David Liebman liked the sound he heard during the soundcheck and asked the board op to record it. Then he called for the band's first ever all electric set. Most of the concert appears on CD 2 of this Whaling City Sound set. HutchFan was there as well with a friend. The applause at the end of CD 2 had to have been dubbed from another show, though our small audience did there best to give the group a loud round of applause. Quote
