DougFelt Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 RECORD STORE DAY 2026 > Joe Henderson - Consonance: Live at the Jazz Showcase Joe Henderson Consonance: Live at the Jazz Showcase ETAILS Event: RECORD STORE DAY 2026 Release Date: 4/18/2026 Format: 3 x LP Label: Resonance Records Quantity: 2000 Release type: RSD Exclusive Release MORE INFO Consonance: Live at the Jazz Showcase is the first ever release of saxophone titan Joe Henderson and his quartet featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen, bassist Steve Rodby and drummer Danny Spencer, captured live at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase in Chicago, IL in February of 1978. The limited-edition 180g, 3-LPset was mastered from the original tapes by George Klabin and John Koenig, with lacquers cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab in Salina, KS, and pressed at Quebec's boutique audiophile pressing plant Le Vinylist. This is part of Resonance's debut launch of releases from Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase archives, marking the beginning of what will hopefully be a long line of incredible releases from the club's archives. The deluxe package includes newly curated liner notes by co-producer John Koenig, plus interviews with Joanne Brackeen, Steve Rodby, Danny Spencer, Joe Segal's son Wayne Segal and more. Stompin at the Savoy Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Resonance's facebook page has this: Quote “Joe's archives comprise one of the greatest libraries of previously unissued jazz recordings in existence and we're very lucky that these documents were made and preserved,” says Feldman, who first discovered the treasure trove of recordings when he was introduced to Segal in 2011. The vinyl will be available for Record Store Day, April 18, 2026 with a 2-CD set to follow on April 24, what would have been Joe Segal’s 100th birthday. So at least there will be a cd version which presumably won't break the bank. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Don’t get me wrong, I’m unquestionably ALL in on getting this on CD. But with a total of 5(!) tunes that are all 22+ minutes each — by just a quartet (Joe + piano trio) — that’s gotta mean a LOTTA bass solos. Quote

But I'm also all in anyways! The bigger fear for me is the drum solos. Quote
JSngry Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Steve Rodby has been around for a while: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Rodby Danny Spencer was the drummer on the Kenny Cox Blue Note sides. Steve Rodby has been around for a while: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Rodby Quote
mhatta Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 (edited) Joe Henderson in 1978 may not have enjoyed the widespread popularity he later achieved, but I believe he was in excellent form as a player. Also, Joanne Brackeen was at her peak. Personally, when I think of Steve Rodby, I recall him playing electric bass on Pat Metheny's best albums. However, it seems he originally played acoustic bass. I've heard a live recording of Joe Henderson in France from around the same time (November 1978), and Rufus Reid was on bass for that session (same pianist and drummer). Since Rodby was the house bassist at the Jazz Showcase, he might have been filling in for Reid. Danny Spencer wasn't particularly distinctive, but he was a competent drummer. Steve Rodby has been around for a while: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Rodby Thanks. I have those Kenny Cox albums with Spencer (though I couldn't have named him), but nothing Rodby shows as playing on (though I do have some of the Eliane Elias albums where he has production credits). 1 hour ago, mhatta said: Joe Henderson in 1978 may not have enjoyed the widespread popularity he later achieved, but I believe he was in excellent form as a player. clifford_thornton Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Given Zev's track record, are we sure about the personnel? Anyway, I am in for the CD version. Quote

Resonance isn’t particularly known for putting out high quality vinyl editions. If it appears to be Dexter Gordon with George Cables on piano that would be fine as well 😅 Quote
JSngry Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 The one time I saw Dexter was at the Jazz Showcase, but Kirk Lightsey, David Eibankd, and Eddie Gladden. That would be fine too! But as long as Eddie Gladden is there, all should be well. Quote

I would assume Detroit was the historical connection between Joe Henderson and Danny Spencer. Of course, Joe's brother Leon was in Cox's Contemporary Jazz Quintet. Quote
JSngry Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 I once got to spend an afternoon hanging out with Danny Spencer, totally cool guy. Looking forward to hearing him play with Joe. Quote
Niko Posted February 7 Report Posted February 7 Re Rodby, he was in the houseband at the Jazz Showcase where he played with Art Pepper... In July 1977, Art Pepper took him with him to NY for that famous run at the Village Vanguard... Rodby played the Tuesday and Wednesday nights (not included in the box set) until he was replaced by George Mraz who appears on the recordings... According to the liner notes of the box, it was Elvin Jones who insisted on a different bassist... Quote
