  1. What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Nice to finally get to hear this one. Good pressing.
  2. Blue Note Tone Poet Series to continue in 2020...

Agree - the Burrell sounds absolutely great.
  3. Correct Way to Lift Tonearm

Isn’t there a stage 5a to re-level the deck and check/reset tracking weight and antiskate?
  4. Blue Note Tone Poet Series to continue in 2020...

I’ve got about 8 or 9 of them. To be honest though I’ve got pretty well all of them in one format or another, many as originals, so I pass on quite a few. It will be interesting to see how the ‘Oblique’ compares with the King version. Hopefully also they will get Herbie’s name right, unlike the CD.
  5. Sun Ra, Accompanist

The ‘Batman’ album I guess - if you view this one as a Blues Project album.
  6. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

Reminder to self to dig that CD out. Picked up from Dan, if I remember correctly. Hopefully back over here doing his usual stuff before long. Bitches Brew box, CD1. ‘Double Image’ material.
  7. Spencer Davis, RIP.

No problem ! It was at the Jazz Cafe in Camden Town, with Lonnie as part of Lou’s band of the time. Early 2000s. I was stood right in front of Lonnie’s B-3 and thought the guy stood next to me on the right looked very familiar - it was Winwood. Great evening - Lou made his usual comments about fusion confusion and a good time was had by all. Lonnie made a striking appearance through the front door of the venue on his way to the gig wearing turban and carrying a couple of supermarket bags as if he had just come back from a mega shop at Sainsbury’s.
  8. Spencer Davis, RIP.

Stood right next to me in front of the Hammond digging Lonnie Smith with big smile on his face at a Lou Donaldson gig some years ago. Obviously a big fan.
  9. Spencer Davis, RIP.

Fondly remembered for this impromptu appearance under the ‘Murgatroyd Band’ moniker as the theme tune for British kids TV show ‘Magpie’ from the late 60s onwards..
  10. All 3 of those came out in Europe in the early/mid-80s on the French Pathe Marconi pressings, which is when I first bought/heard them. Mana from Heaven !
  11. I remember the local WH Smith newsagent store having a big sale of cutouts in the mid 1970s which I used to raid after school. Most of them 50p each. I picked up some US Atlantic’s (Clarence Wheeler, Von Freeman), a couple of the Prestige twofers and a Eddie Henderson Capricorn. Still have them. There were tons of Stax in there which wasn’t of interest. No Blue Notes - very elusive here at the time until the first lot of 1977/78 domestic reissues followed by ‘Jazz File’. I suspect that a lot of those Atlantic/Stax were used as shipping ballast !
  12. Just ordered a copy of this one. By all accounts an outstanding biography of an elusive legend who disappeared in 2000 and remains to this day on the missing list with still no real leads. I saw him, unexpectedly, in what must have been, based on the timings, a very late performance in his career (PJ Perry Quintet). Even by then a legendary figure, a bit of a buzz went round the house and I have to say, I was impressed. Remember the permanent cigarette in the corner of his mouth.
  13. What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Liberty, stereo - an old favourite.
  14. Complete and utter bargain !
  15. Coleman Family Legacy; Another Kind of Soul

Just checked on UK Prime and it doesn’t seem to be on there. Search brings up James May and the ‘Grand Tour’.
  16. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

Pure Pleasure vinyl version on deck tonight ! Forgot just how good this one was. Great sound too.
  17. I find that with new records, quite a bit of gunk comes off on first clean with the VPI - some form of setting compound I think. Sonically, there is always an improvement.
  18. What music did you buy today?

Noticed that Yo-Yo/Hackney Hypsters have a Michael Garrick ‘Heart is a Lotus’ on their site but at £400 it is stratospheric, even for this rare LP and condition is far from perfect.
  19. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

I was in Montreal at that 1989 Festival appearance and remember the posters for the Haden celebrations but didn’t attend this though. Remember seeing Marc Johnson’s Bass Desires with John Scofield. I think I still have my 1989 Festival du Jazz sweatshirt somewhere but whether I will fit in it is debatable.
  20. What music did you buy today?

Thought so..... a fool and his/her money etc. etc.
  21. What music did you buy today?

No kidding - I have just checked their site (new to me) and just picking myself off of the floor with the shock of it all. £100 for a bog standard UA press of ‘The Congregation’. Totally ridiculous.
  22. Yes - makes quite a difference.
  23. What music did you buy today?

Blimey - is Tier 2 affecting London shops that much? Just bought a copy of the CD version of the Larry Young Mosaic. I have 1 CD of this from Mosaic and it sounds very good on my system and also the full LP version and thought it would be good to, as well as having the LPs, also to have a full digital Mosaic for CD and steaming convenience. One of my very favourite Mosaics so it deserves this 5-star multi-format treatment ! Never been over-happy with the compressed sound of those Conns. Superficially they can sound impressive but I find the coherence, timing and panning can be off at times. Mosaic’s treatment is straight-ahead and true.
