Musician Mix-ups

147 posts in this topic

Which musicians get confused with each other in your mind?

Mark Dresser/Drew Gress. Also Dave (?) Friesen, who I think is also a bassist

Walter Bishop Jr./Walter Davis Jr. (or are these the same guy? I'm not sure)

Anders Jormin/Arild Andersen

Pat Metheny/Pat Martino

Ron Blake/Ran Blake

Von Freeman/Fred Anderson

Dewey Redman/Dewey Johnson

Clifford Jordan/Duke Jordan

Leo Parker/Leon Parker

Don Wilkerson/Ed Wilkerson

Misha Mengelberg/Albert Mangelsdorff

when I first got into jazz I thought Kenny G & Kenny Garrett were the same dude.

I'll try to think of some more!

Good one.

Gary Peacock and Steve Swallow

I mix up Gary Peacock, Paul Motian and Paul Bley. It's a good thing the latter two started playing with Charlie Haden at some point.

I recently had a conversation with fellow board-member BruceH where we kept mixing up Walter Davis, Jr. and Walter Bishop, Jr.

Though I don't mix them up in my mind, my tongue keeps tripping over Buddy Holly and Billie Holiday, two of my all-time favorites (as well as profound influences on my own musical concepts).

Not a musician mix-up, but I was just looking at Dusty Groove, saw George Benson's White Rabbit, and pronounced it in my mind as "White Wabbit".

So maybe I confuse Creed Taylor with Elmer Fudd.

Don't get 'em mixed up - I just can't seem to get the spelling right:

Bill Frisell/Lefty Frizzell

I hear you on the Walter Davis Jr. / Walter Bishop Jr. And speaking of piano players and names with W's, I always thought there were too many piano players whose last names started with "Wal" (Waller, Walton, Waldron, Wallington...), not to mention all the other W's- Wilson (Teddy, Jack), Williamson, Wyands, Weston, Wellstood, Wiggins, Werner, Wofford, Williams (Mary Lou, James, Johnny, Jessica)... but I'm over it now.

Also, I used to mix up June Christy and Chris Connor.

Same here. Peacock and Swallow both came to mind. Must be the other musicians they are associated with. I also just realized that both of their last names are also names of birds.

to help with Pat Metheny/Pat Martino, Martino had a stroke, so remember that when you see/hear his name..

With Webster/Carter, when you hear Carter, think that really, really old dude!!!!! (August 8, 1907 — July 12, 2003 ):rhappy:

There is apparently a pianist/vocalist named Mala Waldon!
