John Tchicai, RIP

49 posts in this topic

I just found out the news that the great Danish reedman John Tchicai has passed.

He'd recently fallen ill but I thought he was in the clear. Guess that was not so. A wonderful player and a really nice man. He will be missed.

Oh my. That is really so sad. Along with the similar-minded Marion Brown, he was one of my favorite players to emerge from the 60s scene. I treasure his every performance, and am glad to know there are so many yet to discover. RIP.

Sad news.

The New York Art Quartet on ESP was the first place I heard him and then the New York Eye and Ear Control LP.

I just want to point out there hasn't been anything officially released saying he died. Not even on his official homepage. This thread is literally the only place you can find that says he died at this point. He might have actually died.....but maybe it's me, but shouldn't people at least wait until something like this is officially announced before starting one of these?

While I am going to have to take your word about that. Once again. Don't you think it's proper and respectful to all those involved (like his family at the very least) to wait until it's officially announced....instead of just starting a thread like this is TMZ...and you have to beat everyone else to the story?

Oh shit no!

He was wonderful when I had the chance to meet him ... he sat in our kitchen, we drank coffee, ate sweets and had a lengthy chat.

Very sad news.

Yeah, my interactions with him were always really cool. We're about the same height though he is way better looking.

John was an old friend of mine, a great person to be with. We met many, many years ago, when he was new to this country and working as a chef at the Copenhagen Restaurant in midtown Manhattan. I took to John as a person before I took to his music, but that changed as I developed an interest in the NY Art Quartet.

The Danish press confirms John's passing.

Well I for one would like to thank Cliff for letting us all know about John's passing. I only got to see him perform once a few years ago. He still brought it. Thanks for the music.

Sorry to hear of his passing. RIP.

In the long time Mr. Thornton has been on this board he has proven to be a trusted and accurate resource and not given to acts of sensationalistic opportunism. Thanks for the info, Clifford.

BTW, what is the correct pronunciation of "Tchicai"?

Sad to hear this news. An unpredictable but almost always lyrical improvisor, and a great collaborator.

Left us with some great music.

Early intros for me were

New York Eye and Ear Control,

Ascension, and this gem:

A great musician has gone :(

Tchicai spent his later years in a village near Perpignan in southern France. He seems to have enjoyed the lifestyle there.

No word yet on his passing away in the local newspaper.
