Mosaic sale

Recommended Posts

Thought someone else would post this, but since that hasn't happened I'm interrupting my break from posting here to support Mosaic: they are offering selected sets at 10% off until June 17, 2013; they're included in this list: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/departments.asp?dept=5

Just to be precise, it's not ALL of the sets on the linked page. Only one ones which say "Father's Day Sale: 10% Off Until June 17th"...which doesn't include the Mingus. Mosaic's kind of "blended" things on the page.

That's why I said "only the sets that are marked as such" in my previous post. I had no idea that it wasn't clear enough.

Based on the sale, I just bought the Pass; while I was there, I also picked up the Rosemary Clooney.

Is the Pass set worth picking up or better to buy some of the individual discs?

Obviously, my answer is yes to the set. This isn't the Pass of the Pablo years, where he needed a producer who'd rein in some of his more soporific tendencies. The '60's Pass is full of piss and vinegar, really lively. I haven't heard the Les McCann titles, though I'm looking forward to them, but For Django, Catch Me and Joy Spring are all excellent.

OOP certainly not, possibly on backorder? Love the Jamal, think the Peterson holds some of his best playing (but of course he's not for everyone). The Pass I've yet to explore in depth, but yeah, he was a great player at that time, I very much enjoy his contributions on the Gerald Wilson Pacific Jazz albums).

OK then.........not OOP, I guess.

If it wasn't for the Loonie taking a beating I would be so all over the Jamal

No kidding. Is this an Alberta oil side-effect?

Probably, meanwhile it has gone down to levels that we haven't seen since last millenium I think, good thing there is Amazon.ca marketplace .

Any comments on the Oscar Peterson Box?

I'll keep it simple , considering the way this boards stands regarding Oscar, if you enjoy Peterson's work you'll enjoy it but it won't bring him out into another light , if you care little about him you're not gonna start liking him more.

Prior to obtaining this set, I had no Oscar Peterson in my collection. After obtaining it - I don't think I need any more Oscar Peterson.

But it was worth the price - which for me was only the cost of shipping. I got it so long ago I can't remember the exact source or circumstance, but I had a big credit due and Verve was offering some of their Mosaic sets at a huge discount and voila - I got the Peterson set. I have not listened to it in a number of years, so a lot of this is recollection.

To also add some context, I'll unabashedly proclaim myself a supporter and fan of Mosaic. One of the reasons is that they have filled substantial gaps in my collection - as is the case here. To add further context, based on comments here and elsewhere, I believed Peterson to be a lesser-weight jazz guy whose appeal to the masses rendered him less important in the eyes of true jazz fans - as in why play one note when you can play 5? Juxtaposed to that is the vibe I got when I attended the Montreal jazz Festival - a city that holds Oscar in high esteem. That made me very curious.

To cut my long story short, I got the set and I really enjoyed it. Lots of nice guitar, piano, bass trio stuff. Nice swinging vibe. I enjoyed the vocal tracks and I think there are quite a few of them, If I remember correctly. Those tracks, in particular have a Nat King Cole trio vibe - which makes them pretty cool in my mind. The 5 notes instead of one is obvious to a certain extent - but by what I've read - this set represents some of his earlier work wherein that particular technique was not quite so evident. Some times it feels a bit piano bar-ish. At other times it's some really cool swinging small group jazz with vocals. Overall - very satisfying.

In summary, I really enjoyed the set.

But - I feel that I've now got enough Oscar Peterson to keep me happy. Not going for any more.

I second Ed's review of the Oscar Peterson Mosaic. I've only spun it once or twice but did enjoy it. If you like the Teddy Wilson set you are probably going to like this one too. Straight-ahead swinging music, nicely presented by Mosaic. Not essential but glad I got it !
