  2. No snow overnight! But it got cold. . . down to 15 degrees now, and that’s the HIGH, with it lowering to 0 degrees by 8:00 p.m. Sigh. Cheering myself up with Barney Wilen, “French Ballads,” the excellent expanded cd reissue from a handful of years ago. Such killer music. 500×500 80 KB The original cover:

  4. 👍- as LP from 1985 on my shelf ...
  5. January 23 Gary Burton - 1943
  6. I saw him in Paris in the 80s but only got to speak to him briefly. Half the concert was Monk compositions, and he also played When Johnny Comes Marching Home. My recollection is that he played baritone sax on several pieces.
  7. How many posters here have heard him in person or engaged with him personally?
  8. Thanks, I don't show that coupon. Must be location-related, as I buy massive amounts of stuff off Amazon, receive multiple deliveries every week.
  9. Looks like it's still available if you use the "coupon". But maybe it has something to do with location or account status.
  10. Agreed. The actual cost of one pressing is minuscule compared to the mixing, pressing, shipping etc.
  11. Howard Alk, who directed it, was a really interesting guy. Did a lot of work with/for Dylan and ended up committing suicide. I interviewed him re: his documentary about Janis Joplin. He was also one of the founders of The Second City.
  12. In the 2nd version (the official one), it mostly Shafi Hadi soloing although there is still Mingus soloing quite a bit The ordinal version with all the Mingus tunes barely exists and is not allowed by the Cassevetes estate. That's what I read anyway. TCM streaming (via the HBO Max app) has the entire film. It's still a jolting watch, and the murder/aftermath is just, like, the last quarter or so.
  13. I've created my first vibe coded game thinking about JSngry asking what it is. I started this from scratch 5 hours ago. I used Claude desktop for the interface. From there I had it research jazz trivia for an experienced jazz enthusiast. With that research completed I pointed Claude to the folder of research material. I used a brainstorming skill to create the story line for a jazz themed game based in the late 50s. From there I had claude build the code. We iterated several times to get the look and feel to a point where I was satisfied. I have yet to play the game in full. I've only reviewed the first room and used that as the prototype for the rest of the buildout. When it was complete and working, I asked claude to make it prettier. Last, I had to find a way to deploy the game. I do not know how to do any of this. Click the link to see and play the game. It should take between 1-2 hours to complete, according to Claude. I tried not to make this easy, you should need jazz knowledge to identify the killer. I have no idea if this is good and I suspect there's a lot of room for improvement. For five hours work, I'm satisfied at the moment. I don't want to hijack this thread but at the same time I would love critical feedback, especially as it pertains to late 50's jazz. jazz-detective The URL is safe, netlify is legitimate. If you do check it out, THANK YOU!
  14. I love this and the other two Gene Shaw Argo albums. Terrific stuff.
  15. having seen photos/footage of the scene, there's a copy of Dolphy's "Out To Lunch" among the scattered household items (after the fact). It is a chilling setting.
  16. I think that this Voyage from Jericho reissue will do well, and it might be worth mentioning this cassette material to the proprietor of Frederiksberg. Tyler has also been strangely absent from the NoBusiness CD "loft archive" series and perhaps they'd like to know about some of these recordings.
  17. Nice one indeed. Bjarne Boman is the only one I was not super familiar with upon buying the reissue. There's a really strong version of Strandberg's tune "Cirrus" on the Red Mitchell album Communication, on which Bertil also plays (though I'm unsure if the drummer on that record, Göran, is Bertil's brother... presumably?).
