Just checked my box & disc 4 has 24 tracks. Found more info re the two missing tracks at discogs https://www.discogs.com/release/12524379-Various-Bebop-In-Britain?srsltid=AfmBOor-xf4wFzLyGJcyKk6P5MKEh6KhIcMaFL68-2jq_4pyrsF7owmY baby_interphase Oct 16, 2023 Edited 2 years ago (from Discogs) I recently acquired a copy of this box set and very good it is too [although many of the tracks can be found elsewhere on other compilations] - However, I noticed while listing to Disc 4 'In All Directions' that although 24 tracks are listed here on Discogs and also on the packaging of the release, there are actually only 22 tracks on the CD itself. After some detective work, I found that 'Knock Yourself Out' by the Norman Burns Quintet & 'A Lesson in Bop' by Tito Burns and his Sextet' are completely missing. Fortunately they can both be found on 'Soho Bop' 2CD compilation [discogs.com/release/10272896], the entire contents of which, minus the two aforementioned tracks, appears on this box set.

Brilliant musician. I will remember his concerts dearly. Quite a clarinet band in the sky welcomes a new member.
-
Ted Rosenthal announced Ken’s passing on FB. He will be missed, he had a brilliant career and he was a funny giy.
-
Ah, too bad. He was great. RIP.
-
This sucks. Ken will be missed and not just for his playing. I was lucky to see him and talk with him between sets at the old Jocko's Jazz Club in Methuen, MA. He played there solo as well as part of a "Four Brothers" front line. What wonderful memories.
-
... very sad news - R.I.P.
-
RIP Ken. Thanks for the music.

On to Tom Harrell “Oak Tree” High Note cd I love Tom Harrell’s music more and more. Re-listening to his discs they seem to open up to me and reveal new subtle “cool” aspects. I really like all his High Note releases.

That would be the logical thing to do I guess. Though it's tricky for the label to release with much fanfare if the tapes really don't sound good. Perhaps the answer is a digital release akin to the Fugazi Live Series (currently 750 shows) where people can pick and choose what's interesting to them and download for a few dollars.

Mario Adnet “Jobiim Jazz” Adventure Music cd Adventure Music has a consistently excellent house sound to their releases and I wanted to hear how it is presented in the system today. Mario Adnet is an excellent player and arranger and I share his love for Jobim’s music–this is a wonderful listen.

I’ve been wanting to pull this out and listen to this epic length “tune” for two weeks or so. Finally ready. Bob Dylan “Murder Most Foul,” from “Rough and Rowdy Ways” the second disc. Sony Japan 2 cd set.

I love the record. I have heard that it did not sell very well and Miles accused Columbia for weak marketing. But the music is incredible fine ! But I also like the way they played the Jack Johnson stuff years later on Agharta. Especially I like the bass sound on the Agharta album more. Also, in the mid 80´s on Miles´ album "You Are Under Arrest" the bass figure at the beginning is the same like on Jack Johnson.

Duke Ellington and his Orchestra “Newport '58” Mosaic cd An early morning shift to Ellington. Ellington the trickster magician musical painter. After decades of listening to his music putting one of his recordings on to spin is an immediate transition to his colorful world of grace, sinuosity and sass.

It's certainly an enjoyable record (I found my copy - a 70s reissue on French RCA - in one of those Special Offer bins and at 2.50 euros you can take chances) but it probably will be of less interest to those who are specifically into the original Andy Kirk band and will appeal more to those who are into Al Cohn and his 50s acolytes. (So you should be safe anyhow according to your interests.) Here is the Down Beat review from 1957: The approach of trade listeners in 1957 may not be exactly the same as that of today's collector listeners, so YMMV, as the say. And this excerpt from the liner notes of the 70s reissue on French RCA may also be of interest to put things a bit into perspective:

I came across this album. It's Andy Kirk with a bunch of musicians playing Kirk's old 1930s Clouds of Joy hits in 1957. This is interesting because I've been getting into Kirk, Mary Lou Williams and Clouds of Joy but particularly because of the musicians on it. It's a lot of the same players as MS-027 Mosaic Select: Al Cohn, Joe Newman & Freddie Green, including Frank Rehak. I love that Select so when I saw this I really wanted to hear it. It does not seem to be available to stream anywhere so I ended up ordering a used copy which will arrive in a few days.

On to another Sun Ra, “When Angles Speak of Love” Myth Science cd This material is from 1963 and rather “out there” but an interesting sonic experience. Suits the hour and my mood. This is very 1963 exploratory jazz, sounds like a time capsule to me. Sun Ra: piano, Clavioline, gong Walter Miller: trumpet Marshall Allen: oboe, alto sax, percussion Danny Davis: alto sax John Gilmore: tenor sax, percussion Pat Patrick: baritone sax, percussion Robert Cummings: bass clarinet Ronnie Boykins: bass Clifford Jarvis: drums Tommy “Bugs” Hunter: drums (?), percussion, tape reverb, engineer Ensemble: vocals
