  1. Past hour
  2. I assume you re-did the woofer foam surrounds? Even if they look good, if they are original they are likely not working as they should. I once had a friend say that his woofer surrounds were fine but when he lightly touched one, it crumbled before his eyes. After re-foaming, they sounded great.
  3. Ed Chamberlain – Untitled , what a gem ... absolutely brilliant
  4. Today
  5. Another cold morning! Benny Goodman “Different Version Vols 1 & 2 – 40 Alternate Takes Of Recordings 1939 to 1940” Phontastic 2 cd set, disc 2 Excellent mastering on this set. Goodman was really a force at this time, and his arrangers were writing interesting tableaux for his playing.
  6. now able to watch the doco here in Australia (no VPN needed) - thanks for the update Dan Only slight issue is interview material is mostly in Danish (oe maybe other nordic languages) with no subtitles
  7. Philip Catherine feat. Enrico Pieranunzi, Joe LaBarbera & Hein van de Geyn - Concert in Capbreton (Dreyfus)
  8. I wonder what the "High Fidelity" reviewer meant by referring to "namby-pamby" style of tenor playing in 1956? The velvety MOR noodlings of the likes of Sam The Man Taylor, Sil Austin et al. were yet to come, Lynn Hope or Jay White weren't that big names to have set the tone of the instrument, and Illinois Jacquet certainly was no longer in the all-out honking camp by 1956 but hadn't softened that far either. And the reviewer certainly could not have referred to the cool tone of Lester Young and his school? Or had he had the misfortune of having been exposed to an overdose of Ben Webster ballads? So I wonder what kind of listening clientele "High Fidelity" catered to. Apparently a relatively sedate set.
  9. Looking forward to next Sunday in SF: "Being & Becoming" with Peter Evans/Nick Jozwiak/Tyshawn Sorey + Heavy Arts Ensemble
  10. Wallowing in an old favorite May Downes and his wife find peace in eternity.
  11. At a brick and mortar shop (!)
  12. Just finished and started
  13. Wow. That's a great find. It's been on my discogs wish list for a long time. Haven't checked the list for a while, but it was out of my price range for years.
  14. Yesterday
  15. I continue to be amused at how the "hard edged" tenor tones of the time required warning for general listeners. If they only knew what was coming!
  16. I downsized even further, with a pair of “vintage” Mirage SM-6 speakers that I bought for 65€. Mirage was a Canadian brand, and these were made in the early 1980s. Interestingly I could not find any reference of this model on the internet. SM-5 model is referenced and seems to be very nice as well. https://radique.com/product/vintage-mirage-bookshelf-speakers-with-exceptional-sound-sm-5/ These speakers are easy to listen to, and provide a balanced, dynamic, sound with good detail.
  17. Dug out this Mosaic LP set. I have most of it on Blue Note cds (which I confess I haven’t played in quite some time) and on the Masters of Jazz Media 7 Bechet discs (I have all of those) . . .but these LPs sound really good and are in mint shape. Bechet was such an individual and quite an influential artist, being a model and inspiration for Duke Ellington among others, and mentor for a very young Johnny Hodges. Alfred Lion did his fledgling label a good deed by capturing Bechet at this time. Listening to LP 1
  18. Discogs lists a few at varying prices. But I found a used copy in good condition from an Amazon seller for twenty bucks. 🙂 Thanks. I remember hearing Sun Treader on the radio during my later school days.
  19. You can listen to track 2 "Epiphanie" here:
  20. Gabrielle Cavassa "Diavola" Blue Note cd Released yesterday, her debut as a leader on Blue Note. I enjoyed her work on the Joshua Redman cd and the Adonis Rose Trio cd, so I pre-ordered this one. Good players supporting her: Jeff Parker on guitar, Larry Grenadier on bass, Brian Blade on drums, Paul Cornish on piano, and Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone.
  21. Not Jimmy Giuffre.
