Jazz By Sun Ra Volume 3 (Unreleased 1956 Transition Acetate) Music For Your Ears 3.58K subscribers 287 views Feb 1, 2025 0:00 Call For All Demons (take 2) (false start) 0:56 Possession (take 1) (incomplete) 1:50 Street Named Hell (take 1) (false start) 2:58 Future (incomplete, tb solo only) 3:32 Fragment (p noodling only) 3:53 Delilah 7:30 Delight (take 1) 9:50 Delight (take 2) 12:09 Unidentified Hard Bop Recorded at Universal Recording, Chicago, July 12, 1956. This video collects the unreleased songs from the session that became Jazz By Sun Ra Volume 1, released by Transition Records in 1957. A second volume was also recorded, but Transition closed before it could be released. It later came out as the album Sound of Joy on Delmark. Recently, Sam Records reissued Vol 1 and 2 together for the first time, which is why I chose the name Volume 3 for this collection. It is not officially known by this name and I don't think it has ever been officially released in full (maybe one or two songs have appeared on a compilation though). For more information on this session, read From Sonny Blount to Sun Ra: The Chicago Years by Robert L. Campbell, Christopher Trent, and Robert Pruter.

Happy to report that the promised Amazon delivery date was kept - I just freed my copy of this book from my mailbox. Contents look promising after quickly flipping through it - and it's a print-on-demand job indeed: "Printed by Libri Plureos GmbH in Hamburg, Germany". But a neat job, so nothing to complain about this printing procedure - which definitely seems to make delivery more reliable and speedier. Pity only that the Pacific Jazz book by James Harrod will take another 3 months or so to arrive. I am tempted to get started on this Prestige book very soon but OTOH would have liked to read both books one right after another or both in parallel. Seeing and comparing two appraches to two different label histoires would no doubt be interesting (and instructive).

I looked out the window and was releived to see no new snow. I didn’t want to have to shovel more soon. For some reason I wanted to hear vibes this monring and so I pulled this record from the shelf. “Terry Gibgs” Mercury mono LP. Terry Pollard really delivers.

Say what you will, but ‘90’s Dead was my Dead. Now, 4 of the 6 members I saw (Jerry, Bob, Phil, and Vince) are gone.
-
I got caught up in the Deadhead thing a bit in the 70s. Saw them several times, but started losing interest later in the decade.

Dusty Groove is currently offering a Japanese pressing of the vinyl It's About Time for $35. I don't know if that's a good price or not.
