Posting to remember Tom Bellino, an upstate New York jazz "force". You will find very little information online about his death-very unassuming person. Managed the Village Vanguard Orchestra for years and was behind the PlanetArts website and label. https://www.local802afm.org/allegro/articles/tom-bellino/ From Bill McCann's FB post: "Sunday, September 7th, at 2 pm at Beattie-Powers Place in Catskill, there will be a MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THOMAS BELLINO, who passed away earlier this year. Thomas Bellino was truly a great guy and has been said - a tremendous force in the jazz world. His organization, Planet Arts, produced many outstanding recordings, and Tom tirelessly produced countless concerts in NY State, the United States, and literally around the world. It is a tremendous loss to his many friends and family and to the jazz community alike. Scott Petito, Chris Pasin and Michael Benedict will be hosting a relaxed "Jam" session with musicians associated with Tom during his many decades in jazz. Again, the event will start at 2pm and will take place at Beattie-Powers Place in Catskill, NY. (beattiepowers.org) Tom truly deserves such a tribute."

Great voice, I like his album 'The River' a lot. The coverage of his death over here is surprisingly widespread given his more recent profile.

Boysie Oakes #6. Not bad.

I remember seeing that record in the stores.

Ok, I still got all of the quartets, in order, on to three CDs (1-2, 3-4, 5-7). Maybe they didn't program it like that because 1 & 2 are sort of "student-y", relatively speaking? I get it, but still...

Rivers was later, much later, in the 2010s. He was working with John Murphy. That deal was to have one "repertoire" concert one semester and then a "new music" concert the next. Sam performed one night and then gave a clinic the next. I drove up for both because, hey, Sam Rivers. The others might have been before you arrived. Some were there for the Spring Lab Band Extravapalooza, others just for one-off "workshops". I very much recall that Clare Fischer brought along his chart for Lennie's Pennies, but I forget who played bass sax on it. But Gary Foster was there to add some flavor, which he did. No Warne, though... Oh yeah, one more I remember was Ran Blake, who did a quick hit-and-run. He was just starting his Third Stream Deparment at NEC(?) and was barnstorming music schools looking for recruits. AFAIR, not luck at NT!

Elvin Jones lecture and performance, 24 April 1984
david weiss replied to gvopedz's topic in Artists
Funny, I don't remember any of those, perhaps they were from after I left school..... I remember Joe Henderson because he hung out out at one of our apartments listening to music after the lecture (Woody Shaw's "In the Beginning" had just come out and he had't heard it yet)..... I also remember Dizzy Gillespie, Tommy Flanagan, Michael Brecker, Tom Harrell, Dave Holland and Barry Harris. It was a great series..... -

Zoot Sims & Bob Brookmeyer “Tonite’s Music Today/Whooeeee” Storyville/Muzak Japan 2 cd set, disc 2 Wow, these Muzak reissues sound so much better than any other version of the Storyville or Black Lion issues I’ve ever heard.

Did a couple of exciting albums at a very young age in the late 60's, turned down the lead vocalist gig with Led Zeppelin (they found a decent substitute, didn't they...) and basically drifted after that, but a substantial talent at his best. https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2025/08/05/terry-reid-dead-superlungs/85532513007/
