Saw them many times in the 90s/early 00s, including prior to Jeff Parker joining up, as well as more recently. While my interest in the records has ebbed, I still enjoy their live gigs. I am curious to hear the new one. Interesting that they left the Thrill Jockey home.

Maybe not church but when I busted my ass many times it was a borderline spiritual experience
-
I guess some people went to church at roller rinks?

I'll be on the lookout! Via Bandcamp there's options to purchase unlike Spotify.

Tomasz Stanko 6 CD radio sessions 1970-91 boxset
Dub Modal replied to Harbour's topic in New Releases
Hopefully a Bandcamp or other downloadable option will be available. -
Couple this one with the American Music CD and it's like being admitted to a secret/lost world Baby Dodds is deep. Still.

Ike Quebec 45 Sessions Being Reissued - Vinyl & CD
Stompin at the Savoy replied to Dan Gould's topic in Re-issues
The problem is organs are capable of putting out a lot of harmonic overtone series. So it can sound busy in the way a 12 string sounds busier than a 6 string guitar - twice as many notes. Depending on the organ settings one key depressed can cause several notes to come out. For some this doesn't matter but for me it sounds terrible. Overkill, confused and busy. And of course if you ever spent any time at a roller skating rink, and I did, the associations make this sort of organ setting sound really tacky. The organ on the 45 sessions is not as bad as some from the period, IMO. -
I don't have a lot of personal experience with "roller rink" organ but it sounded that way to me earlier in my jazz journey, but doesn't sound nearly as "awful" now.

Ike Quebec 45 Sessions Being Reissued - Vinyl & CD
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Dan Gould's topic in Re-issues
That's funny - that's exactly how I described it. Michael Cuscuna was not amused when I used it when talking with him about it. -
That's not how I would describe the organ sound, but I see why one might.

Great album I've had on cd for nearly 20 years. "As entertaining as it is educational" indeed.

Bob Crosby Mosaic Mentioned on Jazz Messengers
Big Beat Steve replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Unfortunately I do not have the e-mail exchange with TYQ anymore in my e-mail folder (all this happened in 2024) so I cannot check now. And it may also be that the mail I received was sent ON BEHALF OF M. Steyaert. I remember his name figured in the mail somewhere. I can only say that I inquired at TYQ as I intended to place an order and wanted to find out about the total including shipping because the TYQ prices DID seem very correct to me. So I really was taken aback when I received that message that VAT had to be added on top of it. Following your explanation (the way it has been explained to you by TYQ) it now looks to me that there will be NO VAT added to the list price + shipping costs by TYQ. I therefore retract my earlier "statement" and stand corrected. @Everyone else from the EU on this forum: Please disregard my earlier post. -
Ike Quebec 45 Sessions Being Reissued - Vinyl & CD
Holy Ghost replied to Dan Gould's topic in Re-issues
Listining now, if it was just the Ike Quebec trio, minus the hoaky roller rink organ, highly recommended. -
There's a bonus track on the Japanese CD as per the norm.

This fascinating album follows jazz drummer Baby Dodds as he demonstrates the sonic elements of his famous solos and discusses these component parts with the attentive audience. From a discussion of drumming in the 1920s to a tom-tom "workout," Dodds' album is as entertaining as it is educational. https://folkways.si.edu/baby-dodds/footnotes-to-jazz-vol-1-talking-and-drum-solos/ragtime-oral-history-biography/album/smithsonian?mc_cid=8916691311&mc_eid=2c917bba9f

Got the expanded reissue of Supersonic Jazz this week, comes with a second CD of bonus tracks! https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/album/supersonic-jazz-expanded-edition With this and the earlier expanded reissue of Jazz in Silhouette (with Sound Sun Pleasure included), the '50s are now covered quite nicely. Can't wait for them to get to the early '60s material, that part of the discography has been such a mess!

Bob Crosby Mosaic Mentioned on Jazz Messengers
J.A.W. replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Maybe there's been some misunderstanding. VAT is added when the sets arrive in Belgium and is included in the prices on TYQMusic's site. [edit] When I put the Crosby set in my cart it shows that the total (including 12,50 euros shipping) includes VAT: Subtotal €139,00 Shipping Flat rate: €12,50 Total €151,50 (includes €24,12 VAT estimated for the Netherlands) -

Big Beat Steve replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's what I did. IIRC the reply came from Mr Steyaert himself. I asked him about the total cost including shipping and he told me VAT at that rate of some 20% would be charged too. Was I surprised? Yes! -

VAT is included in the prices on TYQMusic's site. I've ordered several sets from them and they never added anything other than shipping. But don't take my word for it, just ask TYQMusic's owner, Mark Steyaert. -

Fantastic get together earlier tonight, and a brunch date set for tomorrow, but having trouble settling down; hopefully this amazing Silver set will do it:
