Just to add my appreciation for this list. I know, and have. lots of them but that's just an endorsement to check out all those I don't.

I suppose, though, he'd have been outdistanced by Jean-Christophe Averty over on French radio. That man was on permanent speaking overdrive on his "Les Cinglés du Music-Hall" show (which presented its share of early French and US jazz too) I tuned in to repeatedly in the 80s. And the funny thing was that there was a second host on that show who was calmer and more factual. So this one (forgot his name) came across like a sort of "straight man" to Averty. Re- the silence in Strozier's reply, I somehow understand this on the part of the interviewee. (Have heard similar situations in radio interviews elsewhere.) The radio host rambles on and on about this and that about the interviewee and tells the interviewee what he did and and did not and whatever ... (as if the interviewee would not have known for himself and been able to tell it himself to the listeners if asked the right questions ...). Small wonder some of those prodded for a reply felt like "What am I doing here anyway if YOU do all the talking?" Some interview hosts just ought to restrain themselves a little in such situations.

It is mentioned in this film that Blue Note sent her in 2001 a check of $40,000.-- against royalties. We can see also Mingus praising her wishing to work with her.

Chris Flory headlined several days at The West End in December 1979 as a "Young Swingsters". I can't figure out why but Emily Remler was called "Remlick" by Phil. I was able to verify its the guitarist who was a couple of years away from her debut on Concord because a tune they performed that is ID'd as her composition ultimately became the title track to the first Concord record, slightly modified. I thought early on that the refs were appalling in their non-calls of blatant infractions by Seattle. I'd love to see the Patriots win but I seriously doubt their ability to compete with Seattle, and most particularly the Seattle defense.

If pianist Julius Rodriguez plays at a club near you, I would recommend going. He’s on the Jazz Cruise I’ve been on for the past week and he’s something else. Don’t miss him. He has two releases on Verve that I’ll have to try and find.

I became a Patriots season ticket holders last year. They went 4-13. I thought about giving them up. They aren’t cheap. I am amazed at the turnaround of this team. The season started with a loss to the Raiders. The Raiders who end the season with the worst record in the NFL. They were 1-2 after 3 games, making it look like a repeat of last year. The craziest thing was that their defense was their main weakness. Then the playoffs hit and the defense has been insane. Too bad Super Bowl tickets are running $5K each. I’d love to go to one.

I’m seeing 80 degrees with a chance of improvisation. I’m still on a jazz cruise. 😀 I’m hearing that our area is getting close to two feet. I’ll have a lot of snow to clear when I get home.

On a slightly more somber subject, some time ago I noticed a "miscellaneous news" item in a 50s jazz magazine that showed the following tongue-in-cheek practical use of this jive lingo: A recently-deceased cool cat had had the following words engraved on his gravesite marker prior to his passing: "DON'T DIG ME, CATS - I'M GONE!"

I suspect that's the answer but is that the term for all of this music from the 1920s to present day? I'm trying to find out whether there's a snappier term for the era that "pre-salsa musica tropicale in conjunto or big band format that isn't from New York or Cuba". It is so clearly a historical/aesthetic singular moment.

Thanks for the link to the article on Dan Burley. I knew about the reprint of the Dan Burley Jive handbook but for some reason never bought it. Maybe it was because I regretted they had needlessly changed the cover (not for the better). Does your reprint at least look like the "inside" is an actual reprint that reproduces the 40s layout? The contents of the Cab Calloway "Cat-ologue" dictionaries must be online out there. About 20 years ago I found (on two different websites) and printed out lists of the Calloway dictionary that were described as the "Revised 1939 Edition" and a somewhat expanded list that seems to correspond to his "New Hepster's Dictionary" of 1944. The introduction to the "Revised 1939 edition" describes the glossary taken from the original booklet as "containing about two hundred words and expressions employed by the hep cats when they talk their jive, as Harlemese is called on Lenox Avenune. This is nearly twice the number of words included in the original glossary." So this is an indicator of the scope of the dictionary. I have no idea if these are still online on the same sites. But there are others. Yes, worth watching and listening to any time. Particularly since she has also been graced with excellent reissues (and in some cases first-time discoveries) in recent years.
