Forgot to mention that the presence of Connee Boswell on two tracks on disc 1 was a pleasant surprise! Has there ever been a discussion of putting together a Connee Boswell Mosaic set? (Iirc she pops up on the Bunny Berigan box and the recent V-Disc small group set.)

Very sad news. I know many of his photos of jazz greats; he was a close friend of Marion Brown in particular, and an active participant in this forum. R.I.P. 'brownie' ...

Very sorry to read this. I've been out of touch for a while, but he was most generous in sharing his knowledge, his photos, and in tracking down many great CDs for me in Paris' well-stocked second hand shops.

Brownie was a great man. Back when we did Blindfold Tests with CDRs, he would take on the task of getting the discs to members in countries where US mail might or might not arrived on time (or at all...). He never failed. RIP and thank you for being that kind of a human. Large!

I'm more inclined to believe Discogs listing of 1968. World Pacific was then part of United Artists, but UA didn't become part of EMI/Capitol until about a decade or more later. All things considered it's a pretty trippy album, and so is the Lewis (thank you Charles Stepney). Good times, albeit quite niche!

He was one of my favorites to see live. I recollect seeing him nine times: Three different versions of Special Edition: one about the time of Inflation Blues (with Marty Ehrlich instead of Chico Freeman), the group on Album Album with David Murray, and twice for the Greg Osby/Gary Thomas edition. As a sideman twice, backing up Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner. And finally, three times with Matt Garrison and Ravi Coltrane.

Very saddened to hear this ... and I had no idea he had such an illustrious career with the AP. Guy was a great asset to the board and exceptionally generous as well - a couple of years ago I reached out to him because he had mentioned a rare Harry Edison CD with Curtis Peagler, and I had not had any luck even finding a copy anywhere. I hoped he would favor me with an upload of mp3 tracks and instead he simply shipped his copy to me and didn't even take payment for the mailing cost. RIP.

It was a sad day when he stopped coming here; he was so knowledgeable yet so very polite. As a Mingus fanatic who loves The Great Concert of Charles Mingus, I was amazed to interact with someone who was not only there but photographed the concert.

Man, if the recording dates on Wikipedia are correct, Shank was putting down these tracks before Magical Mystery Tour had even hit the shops in late 1967. I assume he had early access to it, given that World Pacific was part of Capitol? Makes Ramsey Lewis' Mother Nature's Son--Lewis' record of White Album songs that came out several weeks after the White Album itself in late 1968--seem like a slowpoke!

I have quite a few of the Legends of Acid Jazz CDs. The graphics suck, especially if you want to actually read what's written in front of said graphics. For instance, on this CD: This is the back of the booklet: Have fun reading that. I'm spinning this now and it's pretty darn good, crappy graphics and all.

Yeah, he was on the BNBB. Brandon Burke did an interesting interview with him in Wax Poetics. That must’ve been about 20 years ago now.

Oh man, *very* sorry and sad to hear this news. He was on the old Blue Note board as well, correct? Had some very nice exchanges with him over the years, and he was very helpful with a couple of early Night Lights episodes. Thanks for letting us know... he was much-liked around these parts.
