I had never noticed this before but Jeff McMillan's Lee Morgan chronology has Lee taping a propaganda film for USIA in June 1969, and playing with a big band on the program. Nipsey Russell, Billy Eckstine, Etta Jones and Joe Carroll were also involved. It is mentioned in downbeat (2/19/70) and Cadence (7/1/69). Lee was in California most of the month, so it would be in early or late June. The video or audio may still be out there. I asked on Facebook and googled. The USIA archives are either in the DC suburbs (National archives in College Park) or Fayeteville AK. Let's find this before the Jazz Detective does.

It's not that I have zero interest in that group, but I don't feel a need to own those and I strive never to be a completist for completion's sake. Back on the topic of Kikuchi, the next recording I'm looking forward to listening to is his Paul Motian Trio 2000 + Two at the Village Vanguard

I don't know Bobby Watson's playing all that well, but does it seem like he played with more abandon in the late 70's while straightening things out somewhat in the "neo-bop" phase of the 80's?

I do have these Japanese comps, and they're both good. Good stories. I didn't know about either.

That was Michael, through and through. Because he had other photos from the "Blue Train" session, he figured out that Coltrane was actually sucking on a lollipop & not his reed in the cover shot, so he made sure he gave credit to the lollipop this time. He was such a wise ass... I miss him. BTW - Michael also said that it was Coltrane's sweet tooth that was supposedly why "Ballads" was made for Impulse! He said that there were stories that his teeth hurt from so many cavities that he could only comfortably play ballads.

I love that cover! Track listing for those interested: I've never heard the comp, and I know it's essentially excerpts, but it actually looks like a good listen. Also, I'm glad that the artist known as "Lollipop" was finally given their due credit.

the Myers/Wadada album and the Myers solo album are magnificient, as are the Kikuchi albums... I also liked the earlier Wadada... the remaining three albums (soon four) couldn't quite convince me to the same degree... still: an amazing run for a young label!

Mozart - String Quintets K.174 & K.406 - Alexander Quartet

Does anyone have any recommendations for Mr. Rodrigues on record? Seems like a formidable discography.

Especially the version with young, hot Wynton Marsalis on trumpet and Charles Fambrough and Billy Pierce.
