I took a look at that kindle sample of the book. I did not read the whole sample, just skimmed through a bit. It did not look that bad to me. I like Kenny Dorham and am interested in his story so I'll probably order the kindle edition one of these days if they ever drop the price.

I've been reading this. Are there any other bios of him? Haven't seen much. I'm a couple chapters in and finding this really excellent! It exactly answers my interests at this moment because I've been going through his recorded output but somehow Benny doesn't seem to have been documented that much in print - a few articles and liner notes that are mostly sketchy and lackluster - in spite of being marvelous and kind of important in the development of jazz. This book has a gratifying amount of detail, somewhat along the lines of Basie's autobiography, so there is a lot to take in. But the research and writing are top notch and the author seems to have been quite friendly with Benny and received a lot of support in the writing of the book from Benny and many of Benny's associates.

Thank you. I held off ordering due to fear of something of the sort (lack of concrete KD info), and have been waiting for reviews. Re. lack of editor, sadly that seems practically the norm nowadays.

We call them "water bug" to lessen the impact, but if it runs like a cockroach and finally squishes like a cockroach .. June Bugs are not cockroaches though. They're beetles. Many newcomers lump them altogether, though. Making an informed delineation of Texas etymology not entirely superfluous. I will be disappointed if Texas reptiles are not equally covered.

I hear Texas has enormous cockroaches.

I agree. Not only Texas insects, but also Texas arachnids - finding a scorpion inside your shoe is unforgettable.

Listening to first cut on Amazon Prime. At least that cut (Pepi's Tempo) is heavily in the Miles Agharta/Pangea mode. I might spring $7.74 for the download, won't be paying $35-40 for the vinyl.

I would not discount the formative impact of Texas insects. Especially skeeters.

I last saw her in September of 2024. She had Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Herlin Riley on drums, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, and the second guitarist may have been Kevin Breit. I don't recall the keyboard player. It was an excellent concert. Her voice may not be quite as rich as when she was young, but she still sang beautifully.

Waiting for opinions on the book from those who have a copy, or that have ordered one and hopefully should arrive soon.
