I was just recently was him reminiscing the ECM albums he made. Some fascinating stories there:
-
His music has always been something special. I first discovered him when he wrote the haunting instrumental "Leaving" for Chet Baker. Later his trio albums for the ACT Munich Label with violinist Gregor Hübner and George Mraz - "Round about Bartok", "Round about Monteverdi" , "Round about Mompou" - were standout lyrical crossovers. Richard Alan Beirach surely was one of a kind - a stylistically highly original pianist, composer, and musician who played among others with Getz, Liebman, the Brecker Brothers. The last part of his life he spent in Germany, first he taught jazz piano at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig. Then he lived with two befriended musicians on a farm in a village in rural southwestern Germany. RIP, Richie Beirach

There may be some good Instagram channels that talk about this style that would give leads and some discussion. Other than access to musicians themselves I'm not sure of other options right now. Reddit sucks across nearly all music genres I've come to learn.

January 27 Pheeroan AkLaff - 1955 Saw him with David Murray at the Göttingen Jazz Festival November 5, 2004. During soundcheck, he didn't want to wait for the drum throne, so he grabbed the piano bench, broke it, and sat on the floor - loud laughter ...

Didn't know about this one, definitely would like to hear it, as well as a completed Concert in Japan by the New York Jazz Quartet.

Is this real? Are you actually on a jazz cruise? Which one and is it good?

Another question for the Latin fans on here: where else do you go to discuss this music? Reddit seems pretty rotten. Apologies to the admins for this, but I think it's fair to ask given that this isn't meant to be a Latin music forum. I have a burning desire for more recommendations in the beloved P-SMTiCoBBFtifNYoC genre.

I know its not exactly close to what others are going thru but here in Plant City, a 24-hour temperature drop of 36 degrees. There's also persistent indications of a legit possibility of actual snow in this latitude this weekend, and it will be even colder for sure. What is certain is that as we come up on the end of our 10th year in central Florida, we have never had to put blankets on the horses so many times. My wife's rule is <40, all six get them and we are doing that TFN.

Well, "pre-salsa musica tropicale in conjunto or big band format that isn't from New York or Cuba" it is, then I guess. If anyone has some great recommendations within that snappily titled non-genre, please flag them here too.

A workaround? Had not thought of that.

Sure. Send me a PM.

No, afraid not. The set is 8 discs long — and comes in 2 four-disc ‘fat-boy’ jewel box cases — along with a tall booklet that has all the notes.

His son Kyle is a jazz bassist iirc.

I like this set a lot. But for many of the works included it's the only recording I've heard, so I can't pretend to rank it vs. alternatives. -
Yeah!
