Della Reese - Della Della Cha Cha Cha This is a greatly underrated vocal pop record in my view. Just pure fun.

Spinning this one again because I was interrupted to run errands . . . . It's so good. Ms Cohen's playing on tenor and clarinet is excellent. Duduka Du Fonseca "Samba-Jazz-Jazz Samba"

It Sucks Getting Old
scooter_phx replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I, too, am old. I turned 65 this year. All the doctor visits are getting me down. I blacked out a week ago and bounced my head off of the porcelain throne. Gave me the worst shiner I've ever had. So, I listen to music. I used to listen to Sun Ra but now find it's too much for me to comprehend. I love Mingus but that too, is problematic. It's interesting that my taste in music is for lack of a better term, "narrowing". Challenging music that I used to enjoy is difficult to follow now. I guess that's my version of Stolen Moments. -

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Just turned 72; I would say the cancer thing aged me about an extra 10 years. It's strange getting old; I can out-play and out-compose most younger musicians, but the industry sees me as aged out, nearing some kind of unofficial retirement age. But after almost dying and then losing about 5 years I am just getting started. Though I am going to start liquidating my CD collection (though I don't know, yet, how). PTSD after 25 surgeries is the killer, night terrors, waking up; then being told that Chemo damaged my inner ear and is why I tend to get dizzy - so another thing is trying not to fall. Which is also a little scary, especially since I am in NYC a lot climbing subway stairs. But musically: fuck it all, there is a documentary coming out about me, I have a 3-CD set coming out, and a new group called the Avant Roots Quartet that is as good as any in the world. Really. So I am not going gentle into that retirement home. Gigging maybe 4 times a year, which sucks, but that's the way it's gonna be.

At 76 years old I am finding all your comments in this thread very interesting. We are considering downsizing to an apartment in a retirement kind of community. Even though we've only lived in our home for 12 years, the thought of "purging" not just my music collection but every thing else is really daunting. It is also kind of sad deciding what to do with old family items that nobody wants.

Thanks for the advice, Kevin. I visit the forum often but do not post comments enough to be good at it.

A fine set and worth revisiting anytime. But IMHO it's a pity they focus quite a bit on the known names of the "usual suspects" who have been graced by reissues elsewhere too. So others "who also were there" (and who you come across when you leaf through "First Pressings" a.o. and then start wondering about them) fell by the wayside. But - yes, I realize you cannot please everyone and such box sets cannot easily be designed as "fillers of the gaps left by others".

the old days of Hat were much easier to follow. Now, not so much! Westbrook is indeed very much alive, at least the last time I checked... at least the Ayler I mentioned above is in very good sound, considering the source material. Folwell and Harris/Graves really pop out of the mix, and I didn't hear any extraneous mastering artifacts. Very little mud.

Without a doubt, the greatest Jomboy breakdown of all time. Also, RIP Davey Lopes.

Wehner H. Uehlinger, what a guy! First, he sells the released Hat Hut catalog items to Outhere in 2017. There is a press release that he would work "closely" with Outhere with "12-16 new Hat Hut releases per year". This never happens. Instead, in 2019 he restarts Hat Hut - rebranded ezz-thetics - with some questionable reissues from other labels' catalogs (admittedly in excellent sound) and some (good) music by contemporary musicians. In 2025, he sells this new Hat Hut / ezz-thetics label. But why retire at 90? He immediately starts this AlAy imprint with more semi-shady reissues (Armstrong Hot Fives / Sevens anyone?). And he gets to keep the unreleased Hat Hut archives! He has a three-year non-compete with Hat Hut / ezz-thetics not to release any music by what he refers to as "living musicians". So what does he do? He immediately releases a recording by Mike Westbrook, who is definitely still "living" (might not be a "musician" any longer, I am not sure). Don't get me wrong, I am most grateful to Mr. Uehlinger for all this manic hyperactivity of the last decade. I got a lot of ezz-thetics releases of the "living musicians" and they all are uniformly strong. I even got one ezz-thetics reissue (Coltrane 1965 - and yes, it does sound way better than the 2005 impulse! release)! But is it possible to be productive without creating so much mess? I honestly don't know, maybe not... I guess that Hat Hut under new ownership (I wish they dropped the dreadful "ezz-thetics" thing) will focus on new music - which is good news, as far as I am concerned. I am curious what they will do with the already released "public domain" ezz-thetics reissues. I see their bandcamp page (curiously titled "Werner's ezz-thetics", by the way) has some, but not all of them. And as for Werner H. Uehlinger, he will do whatever the fuck he wants!

Waaaayyy too late for me when it comes to leaving too much stuff. If I don't purge my CDs & LPs in the coming years, my survivors will have a ton of them. Don't even get me started on my tool bench/garage area. I am a bit of a pack rat when it comes to spare nuts & bolts and I inherited all of my father's stuff too. I have more screwdrivers than I'll ever need. Congrats on the 25th. This year, my wife & I will celebrate 39 years of marriage. We started dating 46 years ago. For our 25th anniversary, we went to Paris. For our 40th, we're thinking about Italy. -
If you type up the listing in a entry box here on the forums, it defaults to double-line spacing when you hit the Enter button on your keyboard. I've never discovered a way to get rid of the extra LF either. The only way to have your listing be single-spaced is to create it in an application like Word or Notepad and then copy & paste it into the entry box. I try to do this when I create a sale here.
