  8. Finally getting to sit in front of the stereo after a morning of activity. It’s cold out there! Starting off with John Coltrane, “Dakar,” a session I have always liked produced by Teddy Charles for Prestige, pairing Coltrane with baritone saxophonists Pepper Adams and Cecil Payne, with Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor. Sounding really good in the mastering from this box set:

  11. Thanks so much for posting. I chose 4 more to go with pre-ordering the Dorham book and have covered my "gifts for myself" for the holidays!
  12. I've heard most of the sideman material here and two of the leader dates on other issues--the sound quality is quite good. I imagine that this set will sound quite good, but I have not heard it.
  13. Chiming (whistling? ) in a bit belatedly ... Others have put the "whistle stop" idea to music back then as well: This might help explaining the concept and the train connection too.
  14. Hardback and paperback both only $20.26 right now at the University Press's website until 11/19. I preordered.
  15. November 18 Bennie Wallace - 1946
  16. The Threadgill and Sorey trios are outstanding!
  17. I loved this series back in the day but never came across this one till recently. As always I already have many of the tracks, but there are also often stray ones that I don’t, and I like the compilation concepts (which were even more compelling in the pre-Spotify playlist era). The title says it all with this one… not to mention the cover!
