We were lucky to be down front for this event.

Back in the mid '80s I spent a night at his place in Bergenfield NJ. The spare room was in the basement with his lp collection. I remember falling asleep admiring his big box of Jerry Lee Lewis Sun recordings.

Damn. He's been a friend since the '70s.

Though I have the big Mosaic box I occasionally take this less cumbersome set off the shelf. Now playing disc 3.

Roscoe Mitchell gave me a copy back in the late '70s.

"African Sunrise" was a result of a commission I offered Randy on behalf of the Chicago Jazz Festival. It was a program called "A Night In Tunisia" meant to display the African and Afro/Cuban influences in the music. Performers were Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (Kahil El’Zabar / Edward Wilkerson / Hanah-Jon Taylor, woodwinds), Randy Weston, Johnny Griffin, Richard Davis, Art Blakey (in duo and Quartet), Dizzy Gillespie Quartet w/ Walter Davis Jr. and The Machito Orchestra with Mario Grillo, percussion, leader.

I have a DAT somewhere of this stuff from a project Uptown was working on. I'll dig it out.

After about 40 minutes the "boopity-boop" of the rhythms get to me. Fun for a while.
