  1. Lots of messy stuff in both genres.
  2. FWIW, Blue Note did not create the Climax label because of the sound quality. They created it because they were not union recordings and it would be a violation of their labor agreement to issue them on BN.
  3. I have the box and am happy to live with the masterings.
  4. While in high school I saw the Freshmen about once a year. It was always a treat when he stepped out and took a solo. G'bye Bob.
  5. My favorites were the Prestige dates - solo, trio.
  6. Said classes were a wonderful mix of stories and demonstrations - much better than real Master Classes. Nothing like seeing Two Ton Baker roll onto the stage when Duke invited him for a 2 piano demonstration. The emotional highlight for me involved Paul Gonsalves in one of Duke's afternoon sessions. Paul had missed the previous night concert in Milwaukee - for the usual reason. Midway through Duke's presentation the auditorium door opened and there was a small disruption. Gonsalves came down the aisle with tenor in hand - he had tears streaming down his face. I was sitting next to Stanley Dance, who said "oh shit". Paul kept saying "I'm sorry" and Duke invited him up to the stage for a version of "Happy Reunion". DAMN!
  7. Yes. Mr. Ellington provided us with passes to all the concerts and "master classes". He also summoned us to chat.
  8. What works for you works for you. You are not defined by your tastes, no matter what the middle school teacher says.
  9. Saw a launch once from the beach at Daytona (I think). A local had advised us to go there to watch the arc. We had been sitting on the beach for about an hour (it was around 2:00 am) and the sky lit up. I said "I guess this is it" and my son said "if it isn't, we're all fucked".
  10. My copy of Way Out Wardell was on Crown. I bought it around 1961 in a drugstore.
  11. Maybe not. Not the hippest fellow here.
  12. Now there's a smug response. I enjoy "attitudes" and like to measure them against my opinions. I think that is how we learn.
  13. Was at the Jazz Record Mart today and finally bought
  14. The Arista contains an extra track too from the earlier session ("Closer"). Levinson plays on sidelong versions of "Blood" and "Mr. Joy." There is a Black Lion cd titled Touching including the material on the Arista double minus the extended "Mr. Joy". Inexpensive copies abound.
  15. Been on the road for a couple of weeks. Mail something when we get home.
  16. The original stereo master for Mingus Presents Mingus was lost at some point. Mosaic used the mono masters since the remaining stereo copies were not good.
  17. Be good if Sarah's name was spelled correctly.
  18. The Klien recordings are wonderful. If you don't have volume 2 and the variations box, jump on them before they go away.

    Jeanne Lee

In a way I always saw her as Betty Carter's goal.
  20. When we are back home (June 1) I will post a group shot.
