    Like Art Blakey, in his last few years Red was very hard of hearing (you'd have to shout in one ear) - he depended on regular sequences/routines to keep from missing his cues. My guess is Benny changed something up.

    The 2 sessions per lp deal was mostly a New York indie thing. All the sessions I was aware of in Chicago pretty much went by the book on pay.

    One session to produce 15 minutes (or 4 sides in 78/singles days). If more music results, payment was to be paid for another session or overtime. It was common practice to allow use of alternates when metal parts wore out, hence 78s with different takes.
