  1. I have 32 tracks by these guys.
  2. That is the second cover. The first was an etching or drawing and the cover was laminated. The story as I understand it: Blue Note planned 2 lps. The ESP replicates the planned second volume (4211). The first volume was to include Story Teller, I Don't Love You, Children's Books and Architecture. Test pressings exist in the BN files, as do tape copies. When ESP issued their lp BN cancelled the releases and Ornette provided the Golden Circles as replacements.
  3. Chubby Jackson should be included. Maybe Earl Spencer too.
  4. I believe it also incuded Savoy, Mercer, Motif and Dial material.
  5. Geez, I didn't see that! Can I get some?
  6. THIS is the thread in question but I don't think the Chaloff set is included.
  7. I was in the studio for that session.
  8. Bar Wars.
  9. Drop Me A Line was recorded for Decca on December 3, 1941. Don't know of a reissue beyond one of those crappy Ajaz lps.
  10. Jesse Jackson physically pushed me aside two times. Once in the '60s and once in the '80s.
  11. Why?
  12. AT THE TIME, I bought the first 2 Henderson Milestones and stopped. I thought he'd "left the path". Not much of later listening has deterred me from this impression. He was a "consummate professional" and fine tenor player, but I viewed him outside the history.
  13. One night when I was there the next table was occupied by Sue and Charles Mingus. They were eating dinner. On another night I was with Michael Cuscuna, Maxine Gregg, Shirley Seltser (sp?) and Dexter Gordon. I'm sure all the conversations messed with the music. as in maxine gregg/maxine shaw/maxine gordon!! Yup.
  14. YES, this is the top level of jazz today. Might be a "fun show" but I would expect more.

  16. Pressing 1000 cds to start is an industry standard. If you stay at the same pressing plant, you can get more at a rate of 500 at a time. Printing booklets is a different matter. They probably printed 2500 books.
  17. Mamie Van Doren Mamie Eisenhower Ike Quebec
  18. Just came across your comments and would beg to differ. From someone who worked with Junior for years as a sideman, I can tell you he was very conciencious about how the music was presented to his audience: His repertoire was a wide-ranging mix of under-played standards to many negleted gems of Monk, Tadd Dameron and others. The structure of his sets were always well balanced. He made sure every tune had introductions, codas and solo backgrounds. He announced the names of every piece and maintained the momentum – as he used to say, "No lulls!" You could say that Junior was not one who seeked the limelight and he may not have been a great business man when it came to promoting himself. But when it came to playing and performing, he was all business. I think we are saying the same things from different perspectives.
  19. Nah, if I'd been there I'd be right up front. Don't you know I'm a pushy guy?
  20. You might underestimate the power of musicians playing material the listener can identify.
  21. Yeah, it was a piano/bass bar when I frequented the place in the '70s. Heard Al Haig, Duke Jordan, Randy Weston, Jaki Byard, George Cables, Jimmy Rowles etc. Generally stopped by Happy Tunes beforehand to chat with Fred Norsworthy and buy some records.
  22. Bought it when issued. Sold it in my vinyl purge about 15 years ago. Two tracks, totaling about 10 minutes, were contained in a Savoy double lp set called "New Music: Second Wave".
  23. Frances Faye Marty Faye Marty Ingels
  24. Screw the sale. If you want something relatively obscure get it now. Check some of your favorites on Amazon and you will see they are only available from "sellers". Bunches of stuff has gone away. For example, check out Lennie Niehaus.
