how much would you give to see this gig?
Chuck Nessa replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw them in their "prime". Would love to see it again. -
Ra fits around, not in.

August 10, 1958, says Mr Bruyninckx.

Evidently, yup. You need Message to our Ancestors. That be the Big Black/Black Harold LP. Ah yes, the home of Strawberry Alarm Clock.

You have about 10 more than I but about half are different.

Break two legs. This message is really from Berigan.

Sorry I caused problems. Does your internet provider offer protection? I'm pleased with the stuff I get from Charter.

What's happening in Chicago this weekend?
Chuck Nessa replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Looks like Ann and I might catch Von (and Peter) at Andy's on Saturday. FWIW, Andy's and the JRM are about a block apart. -
The Shostakovich pairs of violin, cello and piano concertos are fine. Three piano concertos by Bartok are favorites too.

Quick recommendation for the 2 Brahms piano concerti by Fleischer/Szell (or a bunch of others) and a BMG disc of violin concertos played by Heifitz with Fritz Reiner of the Brahms and Tchaikovsky pieces.

I seem to have confused a few people (based on PMs, etc). I love this recording and can probably hum most of the solos. I do think Eric abandoned very interesting compositional/group performances by moving to Europe where he had to work with "locals". Not a problem with "locals" but this was a step back for his musical development.

Laurie chose Art's pianists??? Near the end of Art's life I had a long conversation with Art and Laurie about pianists. Kellaway was with the band and they seemed "startled" by my suggestion of Stanley Cowell as my choice. Laurie quickly told me more recordings with Cowell would follow.

Have you tried "system restore" to get the new machine back?

What did he say? I don't remember. However, that would have been one hell of an interesting combo. Even more interesting would have been a trio w/Randy, Thelonious and Elvin. Chuck producing the record, of course. Guy I did see a trio live, at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, of Randy Weston, Richard Davis and Don Moye. This was in May, 1978. Don Moye has never played so intensely, in my experience. I was there all 3 nights. On the first night Joseph Jarman was there and he jabbed me in the ribs about Don's playing. I did try to make a recording but Randy had to leave town. I then called Cuscuna and he tried to get the tapes NPR made for broadcast one night. Randy objected to the piano and the deal went nowhere. This was an amazing gig.

I just drove a U-Haul truck 550 miles. It was full of shit and I have to fit it into my home. Sorry to hear about your 2 blocks.

Hard to deal with all the opinions of people not alive when it was released. It seemed a nice record at the time and we were thankful. The above is a delayed reaction to some posts in the thread about some words Cuscuna typed a few years ago. I find it all stupid and have refused to jump in. Better things to do. Sorry for my intrusion.

Does he have an original pressing of "Shades of Redd" for sale?

Kurt is a really nice guy and works hard at his version of the "art form". Not my "cup of tea" as he found out 15 years ago when I said something like "I don't do vocalists". Then he signed with BN - says something about my "commercial" vision. Jazz vocal fans should check him out. Point of reference - I think Mark Murphy is silly.

I read this while enjoying Willis's "Bar Wars". A favorite around here. I made an interesting (maybe only to me) discovery a few minutes ago. My listening was interrupted by a call for help with yard work and when I returned and heard the music I had forgotten what was on the player. For an instant I thought the radio was on and identified the players as Guy Lafitte and Wild Bill! They were playing "The Breeze and I" (alt) and within a couple of seconds I knew reality, but the connection was surprising. Now Peter is going to have to reconsider his Lafitte recordings.

I ordered a few (3, I think) Toscanini doubles on BMG from them. Card charged instantly, nothing ever arrived (delivery dates kept moving out on their site) and I finally cancelled. They had my $100+ for 120 days before I received credit. My experience has been their orders usually take 5-21 days longer than anyone else. I only order when they are the only source or are much cheaper.
