Bringing the conversation back to Balliett - I have always thought he was a really bright guy with "really" flawed musical insight. Not bad, not good, just very interesting prose. Younger folks might find this difficult to understand but he was a beacon for us in the '50s and '60s, whether you agreed or not. Thank you Mr. Balliett. JHW always pissed me off and think his reputation outruns his "insight".

Football fans who might be Bud Freeman fans should see my post in the Artists thread.

Watching the Super Bowl and it made me think of Bud. In his final years he moved back to Chicago and a fan with season tickets frequently passed them on to Bud. He'd call me and ask for a ride. One time after a spectacular run by Walter Payton, Bud turned to me and said "That man IS an artist". The only Bears games I ever attended were in Bud's company. Thanks Bud.

Just returned home (about 15 minutes ago) from a company party at the race track in Muskegon. We got stuck in the parking lot and the courtesy/security guys gave up and abandoned us. Eventually Ann and another kind soul pushed the car out while I gunned it in reverse. We were stuck for an hour. The drive home was a "white knuckler" with lousy visibility and traction. Did I mention it is 2 degrees?

Hope I remember this correctly - when this material was recorded Elvin told Bob Koester "some day I'll be really famous and you will owe me more money". In the '60s when Elvin came to Chicago with Coltrane, Bob showed up at the gig and gave Elvin a check. Not too many folks like this in the record biz.

Terrible times should produce great art. No evidence of that yet unless bitching counts. Where in the world did you get that romantic notion? Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Please offer your examples. Then we play.

The source tapes vary wildly with all these issues. Some/many were done from 2nd/3rd generation lp masters.

Do the right thing. But decide what that is first. Proper is doing absolutely nothing that the laws of their country prohibit. We've been through this so many times in so many threads lately. The box is an excellent value, but I find the later Atlantic recordings more to my liking. Yup, grab what you can.
