  1. sonny and shorts were chicago favorites. god bless.
  2. DB reviewers, at any point in that mag's life span, were a very mixed bag -- some trustworthy and at best quite insightful, others close to or utterly worthless. Do you know the name of the reviewer in this case (or perhaps this was when they went by initials only, e.g. D.C. for Dom Cerulli, M.W. for Martin Williams)? As a faithful reader of DB in that era, I could give you a pocket estimate of that reviewer's competence and prejudices. Saxes Inc was reviewed by Ira. BTW, in another thread I pointed out DB gave Ellington's In Orbit 2.5 stars. You gotta know the reviewers, the context and the music.
  3. Many thanks. That is fine indeed.
  4. Just another Hoosier.
  5. No time to sort it out, but a bunch of misinfo here.
  6. I always thought both dates were stupid "producer's dates". YMMV. Why give money to creeps for bad music?
  7. Think I paid $4.98 plus tax for my copy. Sold it for a bunch and bought a TOCJ.
  8. We all do.
  9. President Ralph Kaffel.
  10. No inside joke and he did drive for Duke.
  11. The song credit to B Traut means it was a Chicago session. Bill Traut was a local agent/entertainment attorney/producer/label owner. His son Ross is/was a talented guitarist. Bill owned the Wooden Nickel label and shoved pablum down the throats of a generation. One night in a bar he said if I called him in the morning he could give me a phone number I needed. I made the call and received a bill for $75.
  12. Fantasy was sold because Saul was nearing the end of his life and it was time to put the estate in liquid form. That's the deal.
  13. My all time favorite.
  14. i don't know alto madness but another broadly related session which I like a lot is Paul Quinichette's "On the sunny side" which (besides Quinichette) has Jenkins in contrast to Sonny Red (so overall it's Pres Bird Bird...) (plus Curtis Fuller and a rhythm section of Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins and Ed Thipgen) That's a nice album. Interesting date but it leaves me with a lingering feeling of a bunch of guys moving in slightly different directions.
  15. The first eleven tracks of the cd duplicate the playing order of the lp. FWIW, the original Down Beat review gave the record 2 1/2 stars. Given the era AND the other (then) recent Ellington releases, I don't object too strenuously. I do like the record a bunch.
  16. Don't you mean "pie eye"?
  17. I still have my mono "six eye" from my high school days.
  18. Couple months ago Jerry told me they couldn't find the stereo tapes, so the cd will be mono. Nothing wrong with that.
  19. Didn't know you had a boy.
  20. Andy's is a fun room, always has great music, delicious and nutritious food, lots of interesting people, and it's only a few blocks away from the Jazz Showcase, where the Eric Reed trio will be hittin' ... Yeah, but it ain't in Philly. I think that's the point.
  21. Yup. Had the lp and now have a Japanese cd. It never "caught" me but I have it on principle. I have fond memories of the Soul Note date called "Trip to Prillargui". Also have fond memories of working with him at the Chicago Jazz Festival in the early '80s.
  22. What do you mean? Maybe something like: "I received this press release yesterday from Concord: KURT ELLING SIGNS EXCLUSIVE RECORDING AGREEMENT WITH CONCORD RECORDS Concord Records is proud to announce that Grammy-nominated singer Kurt Elling has signed an exclusive recording contract with the company. His Concord debut is scheduled to be released in early 2007."
  23. If you are "serious" about the music, why not buy a discography or discographies?
  24. How does the record sound? Is the music good? Are you looking for an address to return the record? -_-
