  1. Do they site a source for this version? It does not fit with my knowlege of Tyler and is in conflict with the personnel of Charles' first ESP date recorded about that time.
  2. Don't have the box - what does it say?
  3. One other thing (I know I've mentioned this elsewhere), Charles mentioned he and the Ayler brothers had an apartment together in NY and Coltrane would come by and pay the rent. Charles always referred to the saxophonist as Al.
  4. Autobiography is a 3 disc set.
  5. If you have a strong heart, deaf neighbors and a decent stereo - get it, put it on, turn it up and clean all the shit out of your ears. If you survive, I'll suggest more. Otherwise, buy headphones and make an appointment with the doc for later. I like this recording a bunch - I have it in the original "direct-to-disc" vinyl format.
  6. Cheer up. Charles has more replies. ← I liked him alot. It was an emotional journey for me to recall the stories I posted above (and some I didn't post). Fuck Star Trek.
  7. I am not a fan of the Silkheart. If you can get it, try the Bleu Regard reissue of Voyage From Jericho.
  8. Really depressing to see Scotty got more hits than Charles.
  9. I like his tenor playing a huge bunch but Monoceros trumps all that.
  10. Happy memories of Charles: Charles came to the recording of Roscoe's The Maze at the Columbia 30th St studio. This was my first "in person" meeting after a bunch of letters and phone conversations. A couple of months later Roscoe gave a concert at the Public Theater. I was in town for the event and stayed at Cuscuna's apartment. When Michael and I walked into the Public we were greeted by Charles saying "Well, here we have number (x) and number (y) reflecting our placement in the recent Down Beat poll. I don't have the time or inclination to look up the numbers, but rest assured MC was ahead of me. I'm pretty sure Norman Granz came in first. His stay at our apartment in August of '78 - 3 weeks after the Maze recording session. Ann took lots of pictures and a couple of Charles with our 4 year old Carla are great. We all attended an AACM concert at the U of C one night to hear the George Lewis/Douglas Ewart group play. Driving in Charles' clunky Olds from Manhattan to RVG's to mix Saga in September of '78. It was an adventure and Charles acted as a tour guide through Harlem. Rudy had to rent a 1" 8 track machine for the job - he was delighted to have a crack at the machine he rented. Driving in my clunky Audi to deliver Charles (late at night) to an aunt's house in Lansing, IL - my car's wiring went screwy and we wound up searching for the house without headlights. Not sure how I made the drive home. Introducing him to Hal Russell and the NRG guys at the first rehearsal for the Generation date in Sept. of '82. The rehearsal was a hoot and CT played his ass off at the recording session. I did not see him after that.
  11. and mimes.
  12. This is a bit confused. Charles is on one of Khan Jamal's SteepleChase dates but does not have one of his own. The two volumes of Definite (Storyville) have not been issued on cd. These are very fine and worth seaching out. Saga of the Outlaws has never been on cd unless someone booted it below my radar. The two Ak-Ba records were reissued on cd by Bleu Regard.
  13. Not yet, but anticipation makes life worth living.
  14. I listened to Saga of the Outlaws last night. I miss him.
  15. How much of that is duplicated in the Mosaic, Chuck? ← None. The Mosaic contains all the Brunswick/Vocalion sides and the BF box collects the Autograph, Herwin, Black Patti and Broadway masters.
  16. I really enjoy the 3 boxes devoted to Bobo Stenson.
  17. I don't like his teeth.
  18. I think I know what you meant. I agree. I do not prefer Evan on tenor by a mile. Nothing wrong with the tenor though.
  19. If it isn't opinions we "disagree with", what's the point. I only learn when folks offer intelligent oppositions to my opinions.
  20. Yeah but you prefer Louie to Sonny - you are disqualified.
  21. Not a fan of Joanne (as a musician) but you don't know what was being repaid (financially and emotionally) in that settlement (if it is true). I do not think we need to go there.
  22. Might be an attempt to establish a new copyright. Just a guess.
  23. These are the same masterings as the current US RVGs. The Sonny Clark is the only set with any masterings not currently available.
  24. No notes.
