Yup! You can compare the Madge version with the Ogdon (Chuck, were you at the Madge Chicago performance?) Not a Madge fan - I admire his "pluck" but not the results. I'm sure Ogdon's (sometimes wayward) recording will be surpassed but don't think I will live to hear it (or afford it).

For a "faithful, straight" version (on piano) you can't go wrong with the Naxos recordings by Jando - 2 doubles available for little money. Gould has an equal number of advocates and enemies but I suggest you ignore these for now. For a more "historic/romantic" view, the Edwin Fischer set is a delight. Not sure about the best transfers though.

Not fictional: New Orleans Wanderers - George Mitchell, Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds. Joe Clark, Lil Armstrong & Johnny St Cyr. This was recorded on July 13, 1926 and is one of my all time favorites. The next day the same band did 4 more titles for Columbia under the name of New Orleans Bootblacks. Unfortunately the classic Oliver and Morton bands had 7 members so they don't qualify for your query. I love the above mentioned material as much as ANYTHING in the history of this music.

Back in my music retail days some of us amused ourselves by inventing new ice cream flavors. My favorite was banana beef.
