  1. I will be 60 years old soon. I have seen almost everyone "worthwhile" since then. What's the point? Another "my dick is bigger than yours" thread like the tax one? I've seen Duke's band (while EKE was alive 20+ times). So what. I do understand the trouble with "aesthetics" if one has not heard the "living masters", but don't really understand the question otherwise. Shit be happnin', go find it and be able to post to a thread like this in your future.
  2. This looks like a "my dick is bigger than yours" thread. You can't win. If you pay a bunch you are a "creep" and if you don't pay much you are a loser. Dan, you could do better, on all fronts.
  3. I believe the Mosaic set has one take of Air (tk 1) not on the other cds. I am a Cecil freak, was broke when the Mosaic was available and am happy with the Candid cds.
  4. I used to spend a lot if time with McDougal in the '70s and early '80s. Great guy - More later, gotta run.
  5. I've seen dozens without clothes, but only a couple naked (and they were fully covered).
  6. A good replacement disc will be sent out today.
  7. Though it might not have been a "stereo", it would have had a tube amp.
  8. Jack, any stories from the Philips sessions? Woody's band was in terrific shape during that period.
  9. Let alone Sam Levinson.
  10. Don't know the cds but the Black Lion/Freedom lps (the legit ones) sounded better than the Byg/Affinity versions. I've had Akisakila since it was first issued and like it a lot. I still have the lps but prefer the mix/eq on the AJM cd set. The big warning is the timing/bucks ratio - 82 minutes at Japanese import prices can be daunting.
  11. None of the tapes I have come from the date on Storyville. My "jab" at "original" was because some of these tapes may pre-date it. I have broadcasts with Ball, Percy Heath and Al Leavitt from Storyville and another two with Ball, Ind and Morton. I also have a '57 date from Philly with a local rhythm section.
  12. Yes, and the Perkins/Kamuca half of the date was reissued on the PJ cd called Tenors Head On.
  13. How about "Earl Grant"?
  14. I believe New Jazz 855 was the original master. I have a Prestige pressing numbered 755 with the unreissued take (without Miles). The take with MD clocks in at 2:24 while the other version is 2:55 by my count. Discographies I've checked indicate the Miles take as #143B with #143 for the other one (my pressing indicates 143). I read this to indicate they tried it without Miles for the first take, then added him.
  15. What is the "original Storyville session"? More sometime in the future.
  16. At my income level, I welcome anything the "majors" do to promote their "product" as long as it is within their contracts with the artists. I would not make the deal with them, but I will take advantage.
  17. FWIW, I placed an order today for 12 cds. The "per disc cost" is just under $6.20 per disc including shipping.
  18. That's what is left of a collection of lps totaling around 20,000. I sold a big bunch to a Japanese dealer for "mucho bucks" and then sold a ton of others since the "remainders" didn't seem so important. That is how I financed the Art Ensemble box. Less than 300 left, for anyone waiting for the end. They will be gone by Fall if the current sales rate keeps up.
  19. Mike Weil misses the Roulette Nonet record which is probably my favorite. Don't press me for reasons. I'd be hard-pressed for an answer - just a reaction. Prestige has never reissued on lp or cd an alternate of Yesterdays from the Konitz date with Miles. I have the 78. It is very different. Fantasy could issue all of their Konitz holdings in a smart package. Don't hold your breath. There are bunches of great "Leak Onitz" from all eras from the late '40s 'til today. I am sitting on some more tapes from Storyville in the early '50s and they are wonderful. Just trying to make up a cd worth for Uptown. Lee is a complicated player/individual, just like Warne. We are blessed.
  20. Mine included a 10 x 10 blow up of the liners. Nothing else.
  21. Please explain this to me in the simplist language possible, so I might understand.
  22. Welcome to the music of "your life", not someone else's.
  23. Blakey/Lion Louis/RM Jones Duke/Kapp Art Pepper/Les Koenig Mobley/Lion Al Cohn/Schlitten Monk/Lion and Keepnews Coltrane/Thiele Eldridge/Granz Ornette/Nesuhi Miles/Weinstock and Avakian and Townsend and Teo Jug/Weinstock Nichols/Lion etc.
  24. One thing to understand. In the record/cd biz, Diz don't sell - has not for a long time. Maybe too many weak titles, but they do not sell in quantities you think.
  25. Today I finally broke down and ordered Cecil Taylor's Feel Trio - 2 Ts For A Lovely T. I already know how good it is. I finished my taxes (owed $2600), paid the pressing plant bill ($1900) and said WTF.
