  1. I only have a couple of his albums. I remember liking First Class, a big-band album with Stephane Grappelli. Thank you for the music, Mr. Bolling, and rest in peace.
  2. I grew up in the '80s and '90s watching reruns of '60s classics like Gilligan's Island and Bewitched. RIP.
  3. I started to listen to Frank Kimbrough's Lonely Woman and realized that I didn't have the heart to listen to it it tonight. I went with Berkman instead. He flies under the radar, I think, but he is a fine pianist. Besides bringing in Tom Harrell on an increasingly rare sideman appearance (Harrell is also on Berkman's Handmade), you can't go wrong with Johnathan Blake and Ed Howard.
  4. I saw him only once, with Maria Schneider. Lullabluebye, in my opinion, is one of the great piano-trio albums of this century. Thank you for the music, Mr. Kimbrough, and rest in peace.
  5. Whoa!!!! I only knew about the film's basic premise, but new Roy Haynes has my full attention. I think that this might be his first recording since his last leader date, Roy-alty, from 2011. I can only hope that he doesn't play on any vinyl-exclusive tracks.
  6. Does anyone know how the great Cecil McBee ended up with the trio? Was this a one-time thing?
  7. I ordered this from DiNovi a few years ago and received it with a nice note from him. Is he the last of the '40s bebop pianists?

You can Google and read what the family of the Akron girl had to say about Crump. I stand by my opinion of him. I'm not saying that he hasn't advocated for worthwhile causes or successfully undertaken high-profile cases. Maybe in the age of social media, it takes a certain personality to not wilt under the intense public scrutiny. However, Crump seems to enjoy being in the limelight too much. I'll bow out of this thread. I don't want to derail it further. In the end, I have confidence (or am naive enough?) to think that justice will be served. The lady will be found and potentially be prosecuted, the hotel will have to atone for its mistakes and it may result in people and businesses behaving better in the future. At this point, that's about the best outcome we can expect.

I don't want to minimize the incident, though, my distrust of/distaste for celebrity lawyers notwithstanding. It's a pretty horrible situation to go through as a parent and child. It sounds like the hotel could have handled things waaaay better and saved themselves the negative attention. I imagine that the woman will be identified and suffer some serious consequences now. Things snowball from a basic lack of (corporate and human) decency. Has anyone heard Harrold's The Mugician? I remember listening to samples and thinking that it sounded along the lines of recent Blue Notes. I've long meant to check out that Criss Cross date.

No. Earlier this year, a teenager in Akron was randomly killed while driving her grandma around. It was an awful situation. There were rumors that it was racially motivated and Crump came out calling it a racist attack. As it turns out, it was a case of mistaken identity and the people arrested were Black youths, so more wasted futures to compound the tragedy. Ironically, the shooter's car was more identifiable due to a painted tribute to another shooting victim. In such fraught times, it was irresponsible to make claims that were false. I'm not dismissing a righteous cause. Crump is a self-aggrandizing ambulance chaser who has made a name for himself by capitalizing on the suffering of others. Maybe his higher profile leads to better results and the end justifies the means?
  11. I rediscovered this one after learning that White died earlier this year.
  12. Session C, after finishing up A and B. I can't why I shouldn't just listen to the rest of the set.
  13. I foolishly missed a gig Stanley Cowell played with his daughter in Toledo years ago, but I finally caught him in Detroit in 2016 with an all-star band (Charles Tolliver, Billy Harper, Jay Anderson and Carl Allen). Although I'd hoped that his retirement from teaching would mean that I'd have more opportunities to see him, I'm grateful to have seen him that one time. Thank you for the music, Mr. Cowell, and rest in peace.
  14. I turned 39 in October. When we both frequented the AAJ board, we were two of the young guys.
  15. Disc 6: When you can hear Diz singing with the band in the background, it is pure magic.
