Ratings question on Mosaic sets on AMG
Ron S replied to Jazztropic's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Hey! Who let you out of the Politics forum??? -
That's strange--I received mine from them today. But my Coltrane "One Up, One Down" is backordered.

I've been getting all my CD jewel case supplies by ordering online from Sleeve City. They have just about every kind of case and part (they also sell the tray inserts separately) you could want for decent prices, and notice the coupon code in the upper right corner of the home page that gives you 15% off the listed prices of anything you order. EDIT: Just checked out American-Digital, and it looks like their prices may be slightly better than Sleeve City's, but I didn't compare shipping costs.

Just ordered these three:

Kinda surprising to see the Savoy titles--including some box sets--suddenly show up.

Classic Django (notice the famous disabled fingers on his left hand)

DAMN! And I was gonna try to buy that Conn off you at a great used price! Good thing a new one shipped to me from yourmusic.com 2 days ago. Speaking of 2-disc Conns, I ordered the Stanley Turrentine/Three Sounds Complete Blue Hour Sessions from them last week, and was notified today that my order has been cancelled and that it's no longer available. Gotta jump on those Conns from them when you can.

I attended that screening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on December 30th, and heard Ms. Bach speak and answer questions afterwards. She was extremely candid and entertaining. One interesting story she told was about how difficult it was to locate Art Blakey for his interview. She said that she seemed to always be one woman behind in her contact information, in that every time she'd get a new residence phone number for him, a different woman with whom he had been living would answer the phone and angrily tell Bach that Art was no longer living there and she had no idea where he was. Needless to say for anyone who's seen the film, Bach did eventually locate him. I've purchased the new double DVD, but haven't had a chance to view the second disc yet.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Ron S replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I haven't listened to this one in a while--between you and tranemonk, I'm thinking I should pull it out soon. -
No, he's not there! I looked all around that panoramic view!

http://www.sphericalpanoramas.com/rodia.html Scroll right, left, up or down (with your mouse), and zoom in or out (with the + and - sign buttons in the lower left, or the ctrl and shift keys on the left also zoom in and out). COOL!! Amazing! But where's Harold?

organissimo on NPR's Open Mic
Ron S replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Terrific, Jim! Now send me those press kits you owe me, and we'll see about maybe getting you on an NPR program. -
Where's the fun in that?

Now, with Houston having the number 1 pick in this year's NFL Draft, what are the odds of Vince's returning to Austin next year?

The Winner (musically) More of The Winner (musically) (with apologies to Erik Aggie87)

That dolphin needs a wife like he needs a hole in the head.

He was Cannon's Pete Best, and was not supposed to be on that album.
-
No, but just wait until the complaints start rolling in about how RVG screwed up the sound.
-
I found that out yesterday , but in the past when this has happened with new arrivals, they usually showed up within a couple of days (and probably just hadn't arrived yet at the time they were listed).

As Erik indicated, some do and some don't. The box sets for the most part seem not to, whereas some of the individual titles do. And to clarify, the only difference in the BMG-specific packaging usually is in the bar code area, which contains a (presumably) different bar code and the words "Mfd. for BMG Direct . . . under license" (these words also sometimes, but rarely, appear on the actual disc). In all other ways, the CDs and packaging generally are indentical to the regular retail versions, and presumably are manufactured at the same facilities. The only exceptions to this that I have noticed are Fantasy 20-bit K2s, which do not come with the cardboard sleeves, and one or two Verve Master Editions (Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown comes to mind) that came in a regular jewel case instead of the usual digipack. For the most part, though, the Verve Master Editions do come in the usual digipack packaging.

There's a whole thread on this phenomenon here, and I think it has also been discussed elsewhere (perhaps earlier in this thread?). FWIW, I've ordered many, many CDs from yourmusic.com (although not this one), and have never had this happen.

I always feel guilty when I don't try to save 2 or 3 bucks.

Another service offered by Stiletto (here): Hmmmmmm . . . .

The answer is no. You takes your chances. And the normal lag time for Blue Note releases (RVGs, Conns, and others) appears to be about 2-3 months. Individual Sony/BMG releases seem to appear more quickly (for obvious reasons). Other label families are hit-or-miss. If you're willing to wait for a particular title, you're fairly safe waiting a good 3-4 months after release to see if it shows up at yourmusic.com before purchasing it elsewhere (although no guarantees, of course). For RVGs, AllDirect.com is probably the next best source price-wise--$7.99 each with free shipping on any order of at least $99 (and same great price for Concord/Fantasy OJCs, by the way).

Another Mosaic set comes out on Blue Note. And now available for $11.98.
