  1. I don't really recognize most of these tunes, but I like what it does to White Rabbit!
  2. I like 'em. Knowledge is good. Yes, they were originally rejected by the artist or producer, but not always for quality (or even necessarily good) reasons.

Yes, it's very strange how the booklets to these are put together. There are notes from past members, chronology of concerts, listings of their concert and studio equipment (PA systems, vehicles, (!)) - even a financial breakdown of various concerts by country (!) and they have a lot of paragraphs about the influences, ideas, etc. about each of the tunes, but no info next to each tune about the actual recording date, so, thankfully we have the Wikipedia entry for these. Apparently, someone studiously date-checked these things. I'm not sure what "nb2" refers to next to some entries, but maybe they are corrections or additions to the notes. The only mention of the Peel dates are in the back of the booklet in the chronology. Even Couture fails to mention these in his AllMusic reviews. Some scans: (notice "various unmarked tapes" statement - very odd) No, the Concerts recording is not included, but neither are the studio recordings - just a box where they can be placed. There is room in the first box to put your already purchased copy of Concerts tho, so this is nice. My understanding of their chronology: * Box 1: The Road: Volumes 1-5 o Volume 1: Beginnings o Volume 2: 1974-5 o Volume 3: Hamburg o Volume 4-5: Trondheim (double CD) o Henry Cow Concerts (double CD) * Box 2: The Road: Volumes 6-10 o Volume 6: Stockholm & Göteborg o Volume 7: Later and Post-Virgin o Volume 8: Bremen o Volume 9: Late o Volume 10: Vevey (DVD) * Box 3: The Studio: Volumes 1-5 o Leg End o Unrest o Desperate Straights o In Praise of Learning o Western Culture * Bonus CDs o "Unreleased Orckestra Extract" – a 3-inch CD-single by The Orckestra given to subscribers of the Henry Cow Box. o A Cow Cabinet of Curiosities – a CD given to subscribers of The 40th Anniversary Henry Cow Box Set.

The tunes are not correctly titled (an iTunes screwup). They should be (in order): 1) Nine Funerals of the Citizen King 2) Nirvana for Mice 3) Guilder Tells Of Silent Airborne Machine Here is a complete list for the boxset. No mention of the Peel sessions there or in the booklet that accompanies the boxes (except in the booklet chronology of concerts). It backs up the April '73 titles as well.
  6. • Karlheinz Stockhausen: Hymnen • Pierre Henry - Apocalypse De Jean • Iannis Xenakis: Bohor • François Bayle: Toupie Dans Le Ciel • John Cage & Maryanne Amacher: Empty Words/Close Up
  7. I began to feel claustrophobic being surrounded by all of this, so when I hit 50 it was a good time to start going backwards.
  8. Yes, true...but she also knows that many things that go out the door are expendable, brings cash, and makes someone else happy while the artist in her understands that the creative crème de la crème with special packaging often stays put.
  9. and I thank them!
  10. I just like slowly working my way up to the best looking, most complete thing and then selling the rest.
  11. Not on Verve (ESP), but surprisingly, he shows up here:
  12. Spring is here! It's a bit difficult to keep things in focus while something small is being blown around in the wind: http://stasick.org/P1010426/P1010426.mov
  13. Music/sound is like weather to me. Random conditions bring it and I try to find the interesting aspects within.
  14. Unfortunately, my copy has seen better days, so I need to pull out some of the special software that'll clean it up and save it from further wear and tear.
  15. Never been to Starbucks, but a local friend often mentions the great jazz CDs that he's picked up there. This is probably unusual for a large corporation to be playing such music. In the places I frequent, they're usually independently owned joints where they're freer in their choice of music. Yesterday, I was having lunch with a friend who had studied tap dance with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and of course, we always end up talking about jazz and he was singing the praises of a new restaurant that he'd recently went to that had vegetarian tacos and piped in, probably satellite, jazz. I told him that it may be the same jazz station that a local breakfast-brunch joint just a mile away plays (quite loudly I might add!). So it does happen 'round these parts - more often than one would expect. ®ø∂
  16. I've just received word that Johannes Fritsch has died at the young age of 68. A wonderful composer who was also a professor of composition at the Kölner Musikhochschule and a founder of a publishing house for contemporary music that included works by younger composers. I cherish the times that we had chatting together - including his birthday a few years ago - about the new music scene in general and the various artistic events in Köln in particular. He was a very warm-hearted, humorous man who'll be greatly missed by friends, family and students - both young and old. Currently, there are only German obituaries on line, but there is a pre-update wikipedia entry here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Fritsch Rod
  17. Sorry... The single video of her performance at the Olympia in Paris is considered the crème de la crème of ughniyah performance as you probably can see/hear from the YouTube video. The Arooh Lemeen is just a lengthy song that's part of this "suite" on the full video - IIRC about 25 minutes? Also, I'll mention that there's a nice 35 minute version of "Arooh Lemeen", but I only have the audio of this. ®
  18. Yes, of course - Bollywood, Arabic, and other "exotics" for decades on cassette, etc - just these particular B&W vids of these Arooh Lemeen sessions of hers don't always show up so readily.
  19. Nice to see these YouTubed. These Black & Whites were pretty hard to come by for purchase. They would have to show up in collections such as this:
  20. Just listening to the first seconds of each - the 2:58 version on Disc 7 has a thinner sound than the richer (more bass) sounding 3:04 version on Disc 8. Also, some speed variation too. Also, that's "Every Day in the Week Blues."
  21. I'm expecting differences of opinion. As I've said, I wouldn't have even done this if the tracks were already in the database, but since I needed to have the names for iTunes, I decided to do it the way that I would be comfortable with. The Devlin' Tune discs were already in the CDDB, so I hardly noticed the mistakes until a later time. So, if you feel better with "Soileau and Robin", then you should change it for yourself. I stayed with just "Leo Soileau" because this seems to be the most frequent way that it's been presented on disc ("The Early Recordings Of Leo Soileau" for instance). Same with the previously mentioned "Johnson/Nelson/Porkchop" - yes, it seemed odd, but there appears to be an agreed preference over the years for their names to be presented that way (except close dashes linking their names seemed to also be preferred: "Johnson-Nelson-Porkchop"). As for comments about inclusions of band members: yes, I agree that "Charlie Parker All-Stars" is better than just "Charlie Parker", but it is also better than the artist listed as: "Parker/McGhee/Gray/Marmarosa/Kessel/Callender/Lamond" or some other config. I think that's where the "liner" notes come in - extrapolating on the sidemen's genius. Anyway, I'm still looking forward to the remaining discs. I'll probably keep my corrections to myself this time.
  22. I've been working in the yard nearly all of this beautiful day... Really The Blues Volume 1 text Rod
  23. Yup, I caught that too. Like I said, the ones that I mentioned a while ago were from Disc 8. The ones that I mentioned about a week ago were from Disc 1. I didn't want to keep posting about them, but I hope that I can show a completed, hopefully fully corrected list here soon.
  24. Well, I can understand that it's a massive undertaking and I give thanks to Allen for putting these together. I'm nearly done with a Germany/Austria travel booking and either tonight or tomorrow will send a link to a - maybe crude - PDF that I'll create that'll just be an iTunes screen capture of each disc's revised info.
