Thanks, GM, for more gas guzzlers
rostasi replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
In the latest issue of Consumer Reports they have printed a correction concerning their report on hybrids in their last issue. Apparently, they overstated how much extra money hybrids will cost owners: "Our revised data show that if buyers are able to take advantage of limited federal-tax credits, two hybrids, the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid, are projected to cost $400 and $300 less than their all-gas counterparts, respectively." A major correction methinks... -
what the f*ck happened to popular black music?
rostasi replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, Jon Hendricks did a pretty good job at this. I want more rap without regular rhythms...and none of that rhyming either! -

I agree totally!! (Also, I think he needs to update his references some... and there's always the old tired "back in my day" sentiment that still lingers). -

It's not a "tiny" problem...it's just an embedded link. These things happen - easily - with some of these supersized sites. -
Thanks for that Larry...I didn't know that he had passed away. He was a strong part of my childhood.

Oh! Well, that's pretty uncool...maybe he should've used someone's name outside of the radio business so that any statements he'd make wouldn't be attributed to Dailey? - maybe that well represented composer "Anon"? yours, Ken Nordine
-
Oh man, Daddy-O Dailey is anything but anonymous! He's legendary and part of a grand tradition of Chicago jazz and/or soul radio that for decades encompassed people like Yvonne Daniels, Dick Buckley and E. Rodney Jones (my namesake). I'd seriously consider anything he'd have to say about that city's radio history. Too bad about 'BEZ...I agree about their great coverage of the Chicago Jazz Fest each year. Surprised, a bit, that it's lasted as long as it has. I got out of radio after 13 years 'cause it became such a drag with it's ever increasing rules and regulations.

Bathed in a little over 12 and half hours of Jackie overnight last night -
It was nice - a bit like being surrounded by teenagers who were forced on a Sunday night to dine with their parents, but the food was tasty and presented professionally. (as a matter of fact, at the next table was a teenage daughter who brought a book along because her parents basically couldn't come up with anything to say to her the whole time they were there.)

Nope, but sometimes I snake thru traffic...

Thanks Randy! I'll keep that in mind, but I'm the kind of guy who doesn't even use AC in the car even on hot 100° Texas summer days.

A picture I took while there:

For what it's worth... A couple weeks ago I ate at some good restaurants around there: * Il Porto in Old Town Alexandria on King Street (Italian) * House of Dynasty on Telegraph Rd in Alexandria (Chinese) * Minerva in Herndon on Centreville (Indian) * Dukem at U. St & 12th in DC (Ethiopian) The Metro is great! (except when you need to get your rental car out of parking and they charge you $10 for a $5 "SmarTrip-(off)" card and you use only $3.75 of it ) Stayed at the Hyatt Dulles and the Courtyard in Springfield. The Hyatt was nicer even tho it was cheaper. Hope you like bracing cold weather with high winds (Is it still?) Really awful. ...but spent a lot of time going thru buildings to reach other buildings/museums. Visited the DADA exhibit 3 times at the National Gallery and nearly went broke in their museum store. Hope to return August or Sept. with warmer temps.

boxes for moving LPs - options
rostasi replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Sorry, yes, of course. I think I was thinking the boxes were only slightly smaller with thicker cardboard. The wine box looked larger to me than it really is in the picture. I suppose it's kinda like the guy who says, "Divide my large pizza into 6 slices because I could never eat 8!" -

rostasi replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Well, to be honest...if I had to box all of them over again at one time, then I wouldn't use the Container Store either. It's nice now to just get the extra 4 or 5 for new things. There's no way tho, that I could go with a box holding only 40 or 50 LPs tho 'cause I don't have the space for a few hundred boxes. No prob picking my current boxes up as long as I'm careful lifting. -

A few weeks ago a friend told me a funny story about his visit to The Smithsonian. He was walking up to enter the building and saw two men on the side of the steps talking. One of them was Dick Cavett (this was 1976). Once my friend was inside the Smithsonian, he excitedly told his friend to go back outside the building to take a look at Cavett. His friend did so and came back inside. "Did you see Dick Cavett?" "Ummm, you mean that guy who was talking to Robert Redford?"

Because you're in N.E. Texas, you probably have a Container Store nearby? If you're looking there, get the boxes that measure 16 3/8 X 12 5/8 X 12 5/8. They will fit your LPs perfectly! (about 100-125 depending) They will also fit 3 columns at 2 deep of CDs (6 columns - about 250- 275 discs). I have 109 boxes of them, so it's ingrained in my brain. Rod -

Well, here's a couple of winners Siblings face child porn charges Pair baby-sat victims, Wise County sheriff says; images found 03:34 PM CST on Friday, March 24, 2006 By PAUL MEYER / The Dallas Morning News A Wise County brother and sister remained in jail Friday, accused of using baby-sitting jobs for friends to produce child pornography. Phyllis G. Riedle, 48, and her half brother, Kevin Riedle, 41, were living together in an incestuous relationship and possessed a large cache of child pornography on a computer, sheriff's officials say. "It's a sick case," Wise County Sheriff David Walker said. Detective Mike Neagle said Friday that investigators expected to get more calls from parents whose children had spent time with the Riedles. From photographs on the computer, investigators identified two local children as victims – an 18-month-old girl who had been sexually assaulted and a 7-year-old girl who was photographed nude. Ms. Riedle baby-sat both children. "We think that the brother and sister were both there at the time," Sheriff Walker said. Ms. Riedle turned herself in to police Wednesday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child and was booked into the Wise County Jail. Her bail has been set at $150,000. Sheriff Walker said she confessed to investigators. Officers also found photos of a 14-year-old female relative on the computer. Mr. Riedle was arrested March 1. He faces four charges of possession and promotion of child pornography. He remains in jail, with bail set at $300,000. "Since then, the investigation has continued to grow humongous," Sheriff Walker said. It began 18 months ago when Dallas police received a tip that Mr. Riedle had child pornography on his computer, Sheriff Walker said. Mr. Riedle worked as a long-distance truck driver and carried the laptop on trips, transmitting through wireless connections at truck stops. About a month ago, Dallas police contacted their Wise County counterparts to let them know Mr. Riedle might be living in Runaway Bay, a small town on the southern shore of Lake Bridgeport. The brother and sister were living with Ms. Riedle's two children. The children are in Child Protective Services' custody, Sheriff Walker said. An analysis of the computer hard drive produced thousands of digital images of child pornography, including children engaged in sex acts with adults. "This does have pictures of what looks to be 12- to 18-month-olds all the way up to teenagers in various stages of sexual assault," Sheriff Walker said. "It is a bad, bad deal. Quite honestly, I hope I and my investigators never have to see anything like this again." There were also several hundred video clips. Investigators are continuing to look for other possible victims but say they believe most of the pictures and videos came from third parties. "The majority of images and videos we believe came through the Internet," Sheriff Walker said. The FBI, Dallas police and Tarrant and Wise counties' district attorney's offices have been helping in the investigation. "If there's anybody familiar with Kevin and Phyllis Riedle ... we want to hear from them," Sheriff Walker said. -
Yeah, I think Siouxsie Sioux would probably give her OK for that. Just not sure what it would sound like?

Landy LOS ANGELES, Californai (AP) -- Eugene Landy, the psychologist who gained notoriety for his controversial treatment of and control over Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, died March 22 of respiratory complications from lung cancer in Honolulu, said his longtime colleague, William Flaxman. He was 71. Landy pioneered what he called "24-hour therapy," in which he worked with patients for long, uninterrupted periods. His show business clientele included rock musician Alice Cooper and actors Richard Harris and Rod Steiger. He was best known, however, for his treatment of Wilson, the troubled founding member of the iconic California surf band... (see link for more)
