I'm sure it's just a temp glitch... but for those of who you wanted to use your Xmas/Hanukkah/Kwannza/Winter Solistice gift cards for either the Mulligan or Bechet Selects... You might have to wait a bit as they are not on the website...

Dizzy Gillespie Verve/Phillips Small Group Sessions
tranemonk replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
One thing this has got me wondering.. .is if this set was one of the earliest sessions for Kenny Barron? He didn't get his own recording date until 1973's Sunset at Dawn (according to AMG)... Any thoughts on that??? 'Cause if it is... that's even more reason to look forard to this set... Also... what sessions are likely to be left OUT (probably because they're still in print)??? I know the "Sittin' In" session I mentioned earlier??? -
I generally agree with you.. and if I didn't catch it at the CDU "mistake" price of $38 I probably wouldn't have gotten it... but it was REALLY hard yto pass up.... I do like Gary Bartz' playing on this though....

Dizzy Gillespie Verve/Phillips Small Group Sessions
tranemonk replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
so let the year long speculation begin... !! What's going to be in this set?? Discography??? Interestingly the Verve LPR "Sittin' In" which was just released a few months ago will not be on this set... (I think... and that's a good thing since I don't like having duplicates...) That's a very good record for those who didn't get it... here's is some of what I figure might be on it... (all from AMG... so take it for what's it worth...) The Greatest Trumpet of Them All - The '57 Octet date with Gigi Gryce The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie - '59 date with Junior Mance, Les Spann and Chino Pozo An Electrifying Evening with the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet - the live '61 date with Leo Wright Jazz on the French Riviera Or is it Dizzy on the French Riviera? - Philips New Wave - Philips Something Old, Something New - Philips (Kenny Barron, James Moody) The Cool World - Philips Dizzy Gillespie Goes Hollywood - Philips (Kenny Barron, James Moody) Questions... Dizzy Gillespie Duets (1957)? The more I think about this... I'm very happy... It's stunning to believe that this will be 1st Dizzy Mosaic set! -

I like THAT idea... but who knows they might slip the Four Freshman II on my CC.... Dude, you should just open a "Standing Preorder" with them, for whatever may come down the pike. -

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
tranemonk replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Johnny Smith - Disc 4... For some reason I keep going back to this set... It seems to be growing on me.... Not as good as the Farlow... but... -
Amen to that... If I hear "All I Want for Christmas" one more time....
-
so I'm over perusing... jazzmaztazz's upcoming release schedule... and I notice another batch of Verve LPR's coming out in January... (incl. Herb Ellis' 1st date... ) One of the ones coming out is "Good Pickin's" by Howard Roberts... http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz So I go over to AMG, since I never heard of the guy and based on their bio and his discography (lots of Capitol and Verve dates), I'm wondering if this is a part of an upcoming Select or full set? Verve/Mosaic has done this thing a few times where they release 1 cd/set from an upcoming set (e.g., Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and Buddy & Sweets)... And I don't want to buy this single CD only to find out that there's a 6 CD set due to come out in 2006... So What's the story with Howard Roberts???? Anybody got a sample track or two of his stuff they'd be willing to post?? Will there be a Select or full set?? thanks.... (And Hey Ron S.... Another guitarist....!!!)
-
just got mine today... I still won't believe this is real until I've played ALL 6 CD;s... Who the hell knows what could be in there... Could be the greatest hits of Britney Spears.... !!!
-
I'm leaning toward one that I've heard a LOT of mixed reviews about ... Joe Pass.... I held off for a long time for this one.... I just seem to getting into him a little more this time around... Who's got this set??? Reviews?? Hey Ron S... GEETAH man.... How do you like this one compared to the Farlow, Johnny Smith????
-
Ditto... Why do I feel like this is like the line ..."The check is in the mail..." ???
-
Hmmm... A Buddy Rich European Version?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Really??? How much is the Eldridge going for??? And Hey Ron... S. did you get any of these other than the Farlow as the European version? -
Hmmm... A Buddy Rich European Version?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
What I was trying to say earlier.. was that I don't KNOW if the CDU set is another European version... (aka Farlow....) I'm only guessing that it is... What's odd is why some of their sets end up in the market with European versions at the same time and why some don't... It's not ONLY the Verve titles... (No European Basie or Mulligan....) -
does anyone know exactly WHY they made it 2 cds Vs. 3??? Any West Coast board members care to give them a call??? thanks!

SFJazz Collective Boxed sets....
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
thanks... hadn't seen that before... BUT it is a boxed set.... -
Don't know who's got these...but I've FINALLY got around to listening to the 2004 3 CD set.... and it's great... Saw them live earlier this year and they've got something going on there... Now... onto the 2005 2 CD set... For those interested.... http://www.sfjazz.org/store/categories.asp?cID=10&c=55420

okay.. I'm looking over at CDU at upcoming releases... and .. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...289599194&BAB=D Doesn't mention anything about it being the European version.. but it's $30 less the set purchased at Mosaic and comes out about a month later.... What do you think? Any explanations????
-
Which titles are you referring to? I know the Buddy and Sweets CD is still in print.... Butr what other ones are you talking about?
-
I vaguely remember a very lukewarm/mostly uninterested response when this set was first announced....Since it's scheduled to be out in February... I'm curious who's buying it, who's not and why???? I purchased that Live in LA CD which was just reissued on Verve (which covers the same time period as the box set)... and it was okay... Based on that CD... I'm kinda 50/50 on this set... And a related question... Does Mosaic put out TOO MANY big band/orchestra sets? (3 Basie boxes, Mulligan, Wilson, Woody Herman, now Oliver Nelson, etc.) I'm of the mind that it is a little much. Don't get me wrong.. some of this is great music...but it does seem like at least 1x or 2x a year one of the new sets is a big band/orchestra. A tiny complaint.... Instead of another big band/orchestra set, personally I'd like to see a full Lee Konitz set.... (They've got a lot to choose from... )

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
tranemonk replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Hey Ron... 'bought time I can return the favor.... Even though I had the Bud Shank set (and I really like it)... I am very pleasantly suprised with this Select.. (I thought it might be a bit redundant...) but half of Disc 1 is a live set from "Jazz at Cal-Tech" and that adds a nice dimension.... TM, thanks for mentioning this. I like--and have--a lot of 50's West Coast jazz, which of course includes several sessions with these two. I've considered this Select before, but now I'll definitely have to add it to my Mosaic wish list. ← -
okay it's not about a Mosaic set... but after all the screaming we did about the Mulligan. Brookmeyer, etc... releases.... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...5111100632.html OKay now will they reissue the Brookmeyer so I can buy it???
