nat cole capitol transcription sessions?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
thanks alan.. What I'm also trying to find out (and no Chuck - I don't have a discography and yes I did some online searching...) is this... 1) Has this stuff been released before? (I would suspect that it has but I can't find any info on it...) Was this a part of the 18CD Mosaic set??? 2) Is this just his trio? Or other configuration? 3) Why isn't this being released as a Select or something? here's the only info I've found... "....Nat's next break came when he was used as the instrumental accompaniment to an Ink Spot style group called 'The Deamers'. He also made recordings for the Davis & Schwegler label as well as various transcription recordings for radio use only, mainly as backing for various girl singers of the time such as Maxine Johnson, Bonnie Lake, Juaneleda Carter, Anita O'Day, Anita Boyer etc. as well as many vocal and instrumental recordings in their own right. Between 1938 and 1941 Nat was to record some 200 transcription recordings, the majority of which have never been commercially issued. One of these was SWEET LORRAINE, a song which was to become synonymous with Nat King Cole and which he was to record many times. During this period Nat changed the title of the Trio to 'King Cole and his Swing Trio' before in 1939 calling it 'King Cole Trio'. Nat's transcription recordings appeared on Keystone, Standard and MacGregor. ...." from ... http://highstreets.co.uk/kcc/html/biograph.htm Seems a little odd that none of this stuff has been out on CD.. This wasn't in the Mosaic set??? -

I suspected as much... Hey... for those of you close to the source (aka Cuscuna).... Is this 2cd going to come out soon? .... And on a related Cuscuna note... (for those of you who have contact with him...) Can you ask him the ETA of the Jazz At Lincoln Center Higher Ground, Hurricane Relief CD/DVD set???? thanks!
-
Got a quesion... On the future projects list over at the Mosaic site... in describing the upcoming Select... it says the studio sessions from 1986 to 1991 (plus Foreign Intrique)... but looking on AMG's site... there appears to be a 1992 double Live cd... Tokyo live.... which came out in 1992. Is this currently out on CD? (I don't remember seeing it recently...) Is Blue Note going to remaster/re-release this separately (ala Jazz Crusaders...)? if so, when?? For those of you who have it... I assume it's a great record (given the lineup)??? either way I'm getting this Select... although that Tokyo session's got me very interested.....!

upcoming Jelly Roll Morton set?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Do you have any of his other stuff???? I generally stay away from early trad jazz... (I tend not to have the patience...) but after listening to some of the online samples of the previous Rounder release... and rethinking (yes.. some things Wynton said) about Jelly Roll... I'm debating if this is my last boxed set of the year... And it does seem like a very complete set.... -
anybody getting this? I've got it on pre-order at CDU... but I'm not sure... It's a bit pricey... $90...on sale...

July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
tranemonk replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I wasn't going there..... Yes. This will happen to me regarding the O'Day set. It will happen when I least expect it. I will have a treasure trove of new music to explore. It will be a good day. ← I purchased the Anita O'Day box so I'd have a copy before the set went OOP. I wasn't in the mood for the set when I received it. However, tonight it happened. I'm listening to the O'Day Mosaic box and enjoying the hell out of it. The more I listen to Anita the more I think of Robert Plant. I figure that Anita O'Day and Robert Plant are both blues singers. They share some common ground somewhere. ← -
I do think there is a gap between his recordings and his live performances.... you can call it a tactic... but I enjoy both.... but to each his/her own.... the thing that's frustrating for me... is that this FEELS like it's becoming one of another 10,000 Wynton rants... (not directly you JS... just the tone of this thread....) anyway...I'm done on this one....
-
Well.... JS.... I'll suffice my opinion to say that I appreciate you posting of such a thorough review but one I nonetheless disagree with... (you might expect such.... see the Avatar.... ) ... I disagree on two notes in particular.... 1) I absolutely disagree that there is no "there there." I find many (not all) of Wynton's recordings contain a deep level of soul... (my word - ) ....and I do find emotional connection to this CD in particular....Green Chimneys comes to mind... 2) I also disagree on your point that "If the Marsalis Mafia has hopes that this will be the album that makes everybody slap their foreheads in astonishment and say "WHOA! I've been WRONG about Wynton all these years! This is the SHIT!", well, sorry, it ain't gonna happen." I have some very good jazz friend (an older African-American saxophonist comes to mind)... who has a strong critique of Wynton..... and I do believe he will really like this record.... And respectfully... I'm curious JS... Have you ever seen Wynton perform live??? And has this/would this/might this change your opinion??? I have seen him dozens of times (in a variety of contexts) and the one thing I find WM does NOT lack is soul... and emotionality in his music... But needless to say... we respectfully disagree....

not quite the 1st literally.... (#30 of the set)... but the 1st on the board???? At least I know what I'll be listening to on my way to work this afternoon!!! Depends--what's the set number? ←
-
Jazz Crusaders box arrived... AM I the 1st????? WOO-HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I have the 1st one too... and it is fab.... I also preordered this one... KB really is outstanding...!!!! Look forward to cranking it up in my car....
-
I'm with you on the Parlan and the Hodges... Love Horace... Johnny's not working for me... i'll hold onto it... but it's not doing it now...
-
The Brookmeyer Select is a must-have (IMHO)... I was on the fence for A LONG time on this one... and am very glad I picked it up... Doesn't get a lot of talk on this site... but I suspect folks who got it... like it.... I'm with you on that one Lon. I'm looking for it to be here on Christmas morning. I haven't heard a lot about this set, but with Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Pee Wee, Ben Webster, how can you go wrong..... Reece, Brookmeyer, or Shank Select (fall or winter 06) Andrew Hill select in early spring 06. --of course, this could all change if the Parlan or Roach go on the 'last call' list ←

And WHY NOT???? Waiting for the version on caiman????
