I'm at the point where I have some of the treasured Mosaics that went OOP (and many of the current ones) and I'm thinking that I might burn all of my Mosaics to CDR and keep them in a safe place... (my office).. just in case disaster strikes at my house... (fire... my toddler daughter decides they're good frisbees, etc.....) Does anyone else do that? And if yes, what do you do about the booklet??? Any suggestions/strategies...

For my two cents... grab the Sonny Stitt!!!!!!!!!! I waffled on this for a long time and got it this summer... Definitely one of my top 5 Mosaics... (and I have a lot...) You'd think with 9 CD's there would be one clunker of a set or two... but there's not.... This set doesn't get much airplay on the board but it really is outstanding!!! If I had to pick a second from your list... it would be the Elvin.... Hey Ron S.... You didn't cough up the $$ yet for the Stitt did you??? Geez, you'd think there would have been a little extra effort to get it there at least by Christmas. I have a 100.00 gift certificate and I'm pulled in three different ways: Mosaic sets I really want (e.g., Columbia Swing or Sonny Stitt), Mosaics I kind of want, but should get before they go OOP (Parlan, Roach, maybe Elvin), and then I like the idea of grabbing three Selects from among the many I want (Chambers, Reece, Amy, Brookmeyer, Hill, Shank/Cooper). Decisions, decisions.

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
tranemonk replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Do we know of any US distributors who are selling the Basie or Eldridge at a reduced price??? CDU's got the Basie at $137.15 (why 15 cents... I have no idea...) http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...296730419&BAB=E Cheers, Tjobbe EDIT: if you need help to navigate through the site, let me (and the other natives) know... -
Hmmm... A Buddy Rich European Version?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Got the following from CDU's website.. "The Mosaic Jazz Box Sets have become one of the collectors 'gems' throughout the world. This set features the legendary Buddy Rich's Argo, Emarcy and Verve small group recordings and is limited to only 150 copies for the UK release. The material featured on this set was originally produced by by Norman Granz, Barney Kessel, Jack Tracy and Creed Taylor. 7 CDs" Interesting... I wonder if that 150 copies is accurate??? -
Well I can say.... I am thoroughlly excited about the Mulligan, Bechet, Tyner and Tony Williams Selects... Also psyched about this rumor I heard about a Bobby Hutcherson Select... (I REALLY hope its stuff that's never been on CD since I have a lot of Bobby... ) I will also be grabbing that Dizzy set.... To me... the jury is still out on the Oliver Nelson... and the Chu Berry.. (not my kind of thing).... Anybody got any other "insider tips" about unannounced 2006 releases?? All in all it's looking like a very good year!!!!

outstanding choices... Only one of the batch I don't have is the John Patton.... but all around..

Why no more Blue Note 60s box sets?
tranemonk replied to take5's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I assume part of the answer is that most of the 60's BN stuff for many of those guys is still in print... (and some of it being reissued as RVG editions...) that's my guess... -
yeah I've always wondered why they kept the old prices... Guess that's another reason for those of you on the Mobley fence to get off... (That and the fact that it is likely to be one of the next to go OOP).... $17/CD! Some are $17/CD, but some are still at $16/CD (i.e. the Mobley set)

okay I caved... Had a little Xtra cash... and grabbed the Bennie Green Select... (Without even using my new Gift Card!!!!)

Dizzy Reece Select - Disc 1... Been awhile since I gave this a spin... -
Where will be Mosaic be in 20 years?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm still waiting for a box of unreleased Live... Michel Petrucciani (perhaps with and without Charles Lloyd)??? I would be all OVA that!!! -
still a great value for the buck.... In particular... some of my fave Select sets that I don't think would have ever come out... Bob Brookmeyer, Bud Shank, Pacific Jazz Trios, and Carmell Jones... I just hope they put off another increase in the main sets for a while.... At least they're not as bad as the US Postal Service... another increase next week...

Damn.. I hate it when you divulge my trade secrets ... Since you've foiled my ebay scheme ... I've decided to let Mosaic have some of the remaining 9,998 sets... In fact... I'm in such a holiday mood... I even let them put it back up on their website with sound samples... http://mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MS-021 http://mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MS-022 Who said I wasn't in the holiday spirit??? Isn't that because you preordered the entire run of both sets?
-
well I just got through the entire set for the 1st time... I'm not a huge electric Miles fan, had none of this material and decided that the $38 CDU "mistake" price was too good to pass up... After giving it a spin... I would have to say IMHO.... mediocre... Could have gotten along with 2 or 3 CD's... I didn't like Jarrett's playing... Gary Bartz was the best part... but again I had low expectations... I wouldn't have bought it for full price... and at the $38 price.. it was okay... (no more, no less)... Okay it goes onto the shelf... For now... Maybe in a year or three when I give it another spin... I'll dig it more... -_-
-
I'm sure it's just a temp glitch... but for those of who you wanted to use your Xmas/Hanukkah/Kwannza/Winter Solistice gift cards for either the Mulligan or Bechet Selects... You might have to wait a bit as they are not on the website...

Dizzy Gillespie Verve/Phillips Small Group Sessions
tranemonk replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
One thing this has got me wondering.. .is if this set was one of the earliest sessions for Kenny Barron? He didn't get his own recording date until 1973's Sunset at Dawn (according to AMG)... Any thoughts on that??? 'Cause if it is... that's even more reason to look forard to this set... Also... what sessions are likely to be left OUT (probably because they're still in print)??? I know the "Sittin' In" session I mentioned earlier??? -
I generally agree with you.. and if I didn't catch it at the CDU "mistake" price of $38 I probably wouldn't have gotten it... but it was REALLY hard yto pass up.... I do like Gary Bartz' playing on this though....

Dizzy Gillespie Verve/Phillips Small Group Sessions
tranemonk replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
so let the year long speculation begin... !! What's going to be in this set?? Discography??? Interestingly the Verve LPR "Sittin' In" which was just released a few months ago will not be on this set... (I think... and that's a good thing since I don't like having duplicates...) That's a very good record for those who didn't get it... here's is some of what I figure might be on it... (all from AMG... so take it for what's it worth...) The Greatest Trumpet of Them All - The '57 Octet date with Gigi Gryce The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie - '59 date with Junior Mance, Les Spann and Chino Pozo An Electrifying Evening with the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet - the live '61 date with Leo Wright Jazz on the French Riviera Or is it Dizzy on the French Riviera? - Philips New Wave - Philips Something Old, Something New - Philips (Kenny Barron, James Moody) The Cool World - Philips Dizzy Gillespie Goes Hollywood - Philips (Kenny Barron, James Moody) Questions... Dizzy Gillespie Duets (1957)? The more I think about this... I'm very happy... It's stunning to believe that this will be 1st Dizzy Mosaic set! -

I like THAT idea... but who knows they might slip the Four Freshman II on my CC.... Dude, you should just open a "Standing Preorder" with them, for whatever may come down the pike. -

Johnny Smith - Disc 4... For some reason I keep going back to this set... It seems to be growing on me.... Not as good as the Farlow... but... -
Amen to that... If I hear "All I Want for Christmas" one more time....

so I'm over perusing... jazzmaztazz's upcoming release schedule... and I notice another batch of Verve LPR's coming out in January... (incl. Herb Ellis' 1st date... ) One of the ones coming out is "Good Pickin's" by Howard Roberts... http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz So I go over to AMG, since I never heard of the guy and based on their bio and his discography (lots of Capitol and Verve dates), I'm wondering if this is a part of an upcoming Select or full set? Verve/Mosaic has done this thing a few times where they release 1 cd/set from an upcoming set (e.g., Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and Buddy & Sweets)... And I don't want to buy this single CD only to find out that there's a 6 CD set due to come out in 2006... So What's the story with Howard Roberts???? Anybody got a sample track or two of his stuff they'd be willing to post?? Will there be a Select or full set?? thanks.... (And Hey Ron S.... Another guitarist....!!!)
