  1. I don't agree... Sure ... part of the responsbility is mine... but as many on this board will tell you... you don't KNOW what's often in a set (and if you like it or not) until you've purchased it... Sure having familarity with the artist is important... but in many cases (I'll speak for myself now...) I didn't HAVE the original LP's or had very little by the artist... (or it's an artist who doesn't have much in print...) so therefore it's often difficult to KNOW exactly what the records sound like. My feeling is yes... I bear part of the responsibility (and ultimately most of it... since it's my $$$$) BUT... that doesn't mean I don't think Mosaic makes mistakes... They make ALL kinds of editing/remastering/selection decisions... In fact... if Mosaic were perfect (in everyone's eyes...) I doubt there'd be as much debate on this board....
  2. They just swapped them with you??? How long ago had you purchased the other stuff???? You got me thinking??????
  3. I know we do this from time to time... but I'm in the middle of digitizing my entire collection... and am reliving some of my Mosaic decisions... For my money... the two clunkers.... were the Dinah Washington set (all those backup vocals are truly awful...) and the Chico Hamilton set..... Your take on their mistakes? Regardless of whether or not you bought them.....
  4. Elvis Jones Rockabilly jazz singer/drummer. Well known in concentric circles. MG LMAO.....
  5. my problem is this... The last time I caugh Roachie in person (7 or 8 years ago... ) It was with this group he called the "Asian/Beijing Trio" (something like that)... and it was an unmitigated DISASTER!!! It was SOOO Bad... It was not the first time I seen Roach but it was SO dismal that it completely put me off to this artist.... I know this is his prime stuff done fourty-fifty years before...but I just can't shake that last performance... You guys are forcing me to rethink this though.... I'm about to place my last Mosaic order for the year!!!! (And yes I did preorder the next Singles and the Ellington Set....) and I'm making some hard decisions... I'm leaning heavily (for many reasons Ron S. including those extra lbs. put on by a few too many bagels...) toward also getting the Classic Capitol Sessions and Johnny Richards Select.. and to continue my avoidance of the Roach set.... So... if YOU had to choose between the Classic Capitol and the Roach....????
  6. who DA HELL is that? Elvis Jones
  7. i'm leaning heavily towards it..... What about you Ron S?
  8. looks like an excellent set to me... as I don't have any of those previous releases....
  9. thanks... What ar ethe currently available CDs? Personnel???
  10. what's the scoop again about what's in this set? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...349471403&BAB=D thanks...
  11. there's a LOT of stuff not on Mosaic.. that one must have... Take almost all 'Trane leader dates for one... All on Impulse... (will they eventually be re-re-re-released by Mosaic in 15 years... probably).... As well as all Prestige/Riverside/OJC stuff... Bill Evans...Monk.... Won't see Mosaic for a long time....
  12. thanks Jack... Always helping to clear things up...!! I might have to get that Slide Hampton now.... The Art Farmer "The Time and the Place" is a fine record, but unfortunately, it's not really live. The band did record at the Museum of Modern Art, but the sound was not up to snuff, so they went back into the studio and cut the album, then fake applause was added. Amazingly, the unissued material that turned up on the 2-fer reissue also has the fake applause. Mosaic makes no mention of this, so evidently the myth will be perpetuated. I wonder if undoctored tapes actually still exist? The Slide Hampton "Drum Suite" is another rare item that's nice to see available again.
  13. A live Art Farmer date sounds good to me....
  14. just got off the phone with Mosaic... and because I was curious... I asked... About a year from now... the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions may/will go into the running low category... the reason I bring it up now... $192.... (I've heard a little bit of it... and I'm saving my pennies....) and once its gone.. this puppy's not coming back....
  15. I thought the masses beat Sony to death and they stopped doing that...
  16. Already did... preorder... but I'm looking forward to hearing more of reviews... When is this puppy shipping anyway?
  17. Goad??? How about threaten, bribe, beat you into submission and if all else fails... that old extortion thing can work wonders...
  18. Backed up with my listening schedule... Haven't broken it out of the shrink wrap yet... but I am looking forward to it..!
  19. I've heard a lot of mixed things about this one... .mainly people believing that there is a lot of "non-jazz" on the set... So how would compare this to say the Farlow??? I've tried but I just can't get into Joe Pass... something about him I find a bit "clinical"... Like too much emphasis on technique ... But... as always I'm open to your opinions... Isn't this due to go OOP soon??? This is one of the last sets that I'm going to waffle on until "Last Chance."
  20. as tempting as this is... I can't justify 11cds of Wes..... How much of the Verve stuff is still in print?
  21. You got the Dizzy???? How's that possible? Order placed Thursday, arrived today! That's a quick turnaround, given the Easter weekend AND tax deadline! JJ Set #4885. Dizzy #3774, & PC #2558, if anyone's keeping track of those...
  22. I have the Stitt... and from what I remember there are not that many alternate takes... In my opinion... this is a MUST HAVE Mosaic.... I was on the fence for a long time with this due to the size and cost... but I have to say.. I'm really glad I have it... If you like plain-ole quartet be-bop..... then you'll should like this set... If the quartet thing will get to you... then don't get it.... but I for one... and very glad I did....
  23. anybody know anything about this? I assume this is related to the Concord/Fantasy acquisition.. but does anyone have any more info... Alan???? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...330794975&BAB=D thanks
  24. sampling Anita O'Day as I back it up to my hard drive.... Damn this is one of my fave Mosaics....
  25. yea I preordered this one a few days ago... I've always loved those albums... I think those albums and Kind of Blue still are my fave Miles.... So is what you guys are saying is that we should expect the sound on the new CD (the TV tapings) to suck?
