  1. Horace Parlan Disc 3... Wadin'... a great way to start this set.... and there's a bottle of red wine airing and waiting for me... So at the end of disc 3... comes dinner... wine... and disc 4.... I NEEDED this after 2 days with my infant daughter who's sneezed, coughed and wiped her runny nose on every article of clothing I own.... Those of you with kids - KNOW what I'm talking about!!!!
  2. so each will have 1 disc... or did they record together???
  3. makes me pretty glad I pre-ordered....
  4. Anita... Disc 9... with Cal Tjader... and later the 3 Sounds... (w/Roy Eldridge!!)) Damn that's a good set....
  5. just outta curiousity... I've just started listening to him and checked out his discography and noticed he had a fair number of Verve dates... is it fair to assume that the reason there hasn't been a Mosaic set is because a lot of the material is still in print??? What's not? What would be on a set??? As I have nothing by him.. should I start on his Fantasy/OJC stuff in the hope that a Mosaic set does come out??? What's his 2 or 3 best albums?? thanks
  6. Johnny Smith disc V... I'm telling ya (RON!!! ) This set grows on ya!!
  7. was this the stuff that came out on Fresh Sound years back?
  8. the jazz Passengers???? Was that an OOP - EBAY Special??? Methinks you might mean Jazz Crusaders....
  9. Who's got or who's getting the Lou Donaldson???? I've got a couple of previously released cd's... Sunny Side Up and Gravy Train.... I caught him perform once... and he kinda put me off... (a little).... But I'm listening to the Quartet/Quintet/Sextet CD (not on the Mosaic set..) and its forcing me to give this another considering...
  10. Will "Montara" originally issued as BNLA 551 - Aug. 12 & 14 1975 be on this set???? If so...might not be so good.... as this is not one of my favorite Hutchersons....
  11. okay, I caved in again..... I used my Xmas Gift Card (and another little gift from my wife) and preordered the Oliver Nelson... I was listening to the OJC CD - Afro-American Sketches... (as I mentioned in a earlier post) and really liked it.... So I'm hoping the Verve set is similar.... I'm sure it will be a little uneven... but I hope its as good.... (You hear that Ron... that's Mosaic on my speed dial... preordering again!!! )
  12. Slicker??? (As in tight arrangements, compositions and playing... ALA Benny Golson??? [i know Golson didn't do big bands but I'm trying to understand your concept... with a point of reference...) The material on the Mosaic is slicker, less "rough and ready".
  13. got a question for you Oliver Nelson experts... I bought the single OJC CD "Afro-American Sketches" since it was a record around the time of the Mosaic set... I like it a lot and was wondering - Will the Mosaic set be much different than this CD?... I know (at least AMG) has mixed reviews of the individual LP's....
  14. Did they really lay off staff???? uh oh.... I only bought one European edition (out of 30+ Mosaics)... but if that's true.... I'll stick to their website then....
  15. guess I still didn't get my question answered in the affirmative... (which was... Is there a US Distributor selling the European Roy Eldridge Mosaic.... and at what price...?) I will take that to assume that the answer (that we know of) is no....
  16. exactly... that's the same problem I have.... I assume a "Fine Arts Rider" is a seperate policy for artistic valuables???
  17. I'm not quite at your level Ken... I've got about half of the Selects and about 22 sets... I know it's a daunting task... but I am slightly inclined to burn them.. Would take a good day or so... but it can be done... (Might only provide me piece of mind..... but...) Did you insure yours??? I talked with my insurance guy once and he was like.. "what the hell.. you want to insure CDs????" Did you get a seperate policy??? I recommend not worrying about it. If a disaster like that struck your house, I'm sure the good folk on this Board would be eager to help you out with some CDR's. Count me in.
  18. I'm at the point where I have some of the treasured Mosaics that went OOP (and many of the current ones) and I'm thinking that I might burn all of my Mosaics to CDR and keep them in a safe place... (my office).. just in case disaster strikes at my house... (fire... my toddler daughter decides they're good frisbees, etc.....) Does anyone else do that? And if yes, what do you do about the booklet??? Any suggestions/strategies...
  19. For my two cents... grab the Sonny Stitt!!!!!!!!!! I waffled on this for a long time and got it this summer... Definitely one of my top 5 Mosaics... (and I have a lot...) You'd think with 9 CD's there would be one clunker of a set or two... but there's not.... This set doesn't get much airplay on the board but it really is outstanding!!! If I had to pick a second from your list... it would be the Elvin.... Hey Ron S.... You didn't cough up the $$ yet for the Stitt did you??? Geez, you'd think there would have been a little extra effort to get it there at least by Christmas. I have a 100.00 gift certificate and I'm pulled in three different ways: Mosaic sets I really want (e.g., Columbia Swing or Sonny Stitt), Mosaics I kind of want, but should get before they go OOP (Parlan, Roach, maybe Elvin), and then I like the idea of grabbing three Selects from among the many I want (Chambers, Reece, Amy, Brookmeyer, Hill, Shank/Cooper). Decisions, decisions.
  20. Do we know of any US distributors who are selling the Basie or Eldridge at a reduced price??? CDU's got the Basie at $137.15 (why 15 cents... I have no idea...) http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...296730419&BAB=E Cheers, Tjobbe EDIT: if you need help to navigate through the site, let me (and the other natives) know...
  21. Got the following from CDU's website.. "The Mosaic Jazz Box Sets have become one of the collectors 'gems' throughout the world. This set features the legendary Buddy Rich's Argo, Emarcy and Verve small group recordings and is limited to only 150 copies for the UK release. The material featured on this set was originally produced by by Norman Granz, Barney Kessel, Jack Tracy and Creed Taylor. 7 CDs" Interesting... I wonder if that 150 copies is accurate???
  22. Well I can say.... I am thoroughlly excited about the Mulligan, Bechet, Tyner and Tony Williams Selects... Also psyched about this rumor I heard about a Bobby Hutcherson Select... (I REALLY hope its stuff that's never been on CD since I have a lot of Bobby... ) I will also be grabbing that Dizzy set.... To me... the jury is still out on the Oliver Nelson... and the Chu Berry.. (not my kind of thing).... Anybody got any other "insider tips" about unannounced 2006 releases?? All in all it's looking like a very good year!!!!
  23. outstanding choices... Only one of the batch I don't have is the John Patton.... but all around..
  24. I assume part of the answer is that most of the 60's BN stuff for many of those guys is still in print... (and some of it being reissued as RVG editions...) that's my guess...
