  1. Got a quesion... On the future projects list over at the Mosaic site... in describing the upcoming Select... it says the studio sessions from 1986 to 1991 (plus Foreign Intrique)... but looking on AMG's site... there appears to be a 1992 double Live cd... Tokyo live.... which came out in 1992. Is this currently out on CD? (I don't remember seeing it recently...) Is Blue Note going to remaster/re-release this separately (ala Jazz Crusaders...)? if so, when?? For those of you who have it... I assume it's a great record (given the lineup)??? either way I'm getting this Select... although that Tokyo session's got me very interested.....!
  2. ooops... typo... I meant the JSP.... What's the JSO one I should stay away from? NO!!!! Not the JSO set!!! That one SUCKS!!!! (We said the JSP set.) ←
  3. YEAH! Dat's My GUY!!! I decided to take y'all's advice (particular Ron's) and go with the JSO set....Hopefully if I like it I'll get the LOC set as an Xmas gift or something... Hey.. those of you who do get the LOC set... please review...
  4. AWESOME! Ron.. you are the MAN.. again...!! thanks on this one... I may go this way before the LOC recordings...
  5. thanks jazzbo.... yea... I'm on the fence on this one... the kicker is the CDU sale price... of $90... you know after it comes out everyone's price is going go up....
  6. Do you have any of his other stuff???? I generally stay away from early trad jazz... (I tend not to have the patience...) but after listening to some of the online samples of the previous Rounder release... and rethinking (yes.. some things Wynton said) about Jelly Roll... I'm debating if this is my last boxed set of the year... And it does seem like a very complete set....
  7. anybody getting this? I've got it on pre-order at CDU... but I'm not sure... It's a bit pricey... $90...on sale...
  8. I wasn't going there..... Yes. This will happen to me regarding the O'Day set. It will happen when I least expect it. I will have a treasure trove of new music to explore. It will be a good day. ← I purchased the Anita O'Day box so I'd have a copy before the set went OOP. I wasn't in the mood for the set when I received it. However, tonight it happened. I'm listening to the O'Day Mosaic box and enjoying the hell out of it. The more I listen to Anita the more I think of Robert Plant. I figure that Anita O'Day and Robert Plant are both blues singers. They share some common ground somewhere. ←
  9. I do think there is a gap between his recordings and his live performances.... you can call it a tactic... but I enjoy both.... but to each his/her own.... the thing that's frustrating for me... is that this FEELS like it's becoming one of another 10,000 Wynton rants... (not directly you JS... just the tone of this thread....) anyway...I'm done on this one....
  10. Well.... JS.... I'll suffice my opinion to say that I appreciate you posting of such a thorough review but one I nonetheless disagree with... (you might expect such.... see the Avatar.... ) ... I disagree on two notes in particular.... 1) I absolutely disagree that there is no "there there." I find many (not all) of Wynton's recordings contain a deep level of soul... (my word - ) ....and I do find emotional connection to this CD in particular....Green Chimneys comes to mind... 2) I also disagree on your point that "If the Marsalis Mafia has hopes that this will be the album that makes everybody slap their foreheads in astonishment and say "WHOA! I've been WRONG about Wynton all these years! This is the SHIT!", well, sorry, it ain't gonna happen." I have some very good jazz friend (an older African-American saxophonist comes to mind)... who has a strong critique of Wynton..... and I do believe he will really like this record.... And respectfully... I'm curious JS... Have you ever seen Wynton perform live??? And has this/would this/might this change your opinion??? I have seen him dozens of times (in a variety of contexts) and the one thing I find WM does NOT lack is soul... and emotionality in his music... But needless to say... we respectfully disagree....
  11. not quite the 1st literally.... (#30 of the set)... but the 1st on the board???? At least I know what I'll be listening to on my way to work this afternoon!!! Depends--what's the set number? ←
  12. Jazz Crusaders box arrived... AM I the 1st????? WOO-HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. I have the 1st one too... and it is fab.... I also preordered this one... KB really is outstanding...!!!! Look forward to cranking it up in my car....
  14. I'm with you on the Parlan and the Hodges... Love Horace... Johnny's not working for me... i'll hold onto it... but it's not doing it now...
  15. The Brookmeyer Select is a must-have (IMHO)... I was on the fence for A LONG time on this one... and am very glad I picked it up... Doesn't get a lot of talk on this site... but I suspect folks who got it... like it.... I'm with you on that one Lon. I'm looking for it to be here on Christmas morning. I haven't heard a lot about this set, but with Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Pee Wee, Ben Webster, how can you go wrong..... Reece, Brookmeyer, or Shank Select (fall or winter 06) Andrew Hill select in early spring 06. --of course, this could all change if the Parlan or Roach go on the 'last call' list ←
  16. And WHY NOT???? Waiting for the version on caiman????
  17. http://www.cduniverse.com/promo/feature.as...&cart=269934012 I'm afraid to look.... (and NO i don't work for them....) my CC bill will tell you that.... okay....I looked... it's not so bad... not many titles....
  18. anybody check this out....???? its really cool... it's #10 and the bottom on the song list... http://bluenote.com/detail.asp?SelectionID=10459
  19. I see through alan's website that Blue Note has a new series... entitled such... I assume this is simply a compilation CD....? right???? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=269622826
  20. Now why on earth would I want to buy this???? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz I don't care how cheap it is....
  21. I don't even know what to say....
  22. nice review...I agree with most of it... But I REALLY liked "Amazing Grace..." (In general I LOVE that tune...) I missed my chance to see this at the Village Vanguard last fall... but the record is great.... Good, but short liner notes also...
  23. Bummer.... for those of you who were on the fence... I'd call Mosaic and see if there was 1 flloating around somewhere... Got mine a few months back and it is great!
  24. I kinda feel like we (the fans/regular buyers) should encourage/help Mosaic do something unique for their 25th anniversary.... (only 3 years away).... Ideas???? 1. A Mosaic "Membership" club? ($xx per year and you get ???. We, of course, should be grandfathered in... say anyone who's bought at least 5 sets... [selects not included.]) 2. An all-star benefit concert/mini-tour (with 2 free tickets for the Mosaic old-timers [anyone who's bought 10-12 sets or more)??? Part of the proceeds go to the Jazz Foundation of America.... [Does anybody, other than me, remember when Verve did their little version of JATP about 10 years ago....??? It was REALLY cool!! Got to see Charlie Haden, Joe Henderson, James Carter, etc...) 3. First dibs on any sets "running low"/"last chance?" (Perhaps a select email list of Mosaic Old-timers and THOSE people get the 1st announcement with the website and general public finding out later...) 4. Any other ideas?????? I definitely think (and did email Mosaic) saying that they should begin offering their "hard-core base" something additional....
  25. You may be able to find someone saying that on the Zapruder film....
